590758 2007-09-13 07:46:00 I am informed that Core 2 Duo CPUs are best when coupled with RAMs that run at or twice the speed of its FSB. I have a Core 2 Duo E6750 running at 3.2GHz and 400MHz FSB.

I'm buying a higher-end DDR2 800 RAM than my current cheap A-Data ones, and in reviews it could easily do 1010MHz. But I'm wondering if this actually slows the memory performance in any way?

590759 2007-09-13 09:34:00 Are you sure 400MHz FSB is right? That chip should be running a lot faster - if I recall correctly it should have a FSB speed of 1333MHz.

No, overclocking your ram to 1010MHz won't slow anything down, but it may cause your memory to be come unstable - which means system crashes. Also (depending on how far you push it of course) watch out for overheating.

590760 2007-09-13 09:46:00 3.2GHz - 400MHz x 8. So it's actually 1600MHz FSB (quad-pumped) now.

I'm buying Transcend aXeram - at 1.8v, it does 800MHz on 4-4-4-12. A review shows they can run at 1GHz with 1.8v and 5-5-5-15 timings.

590762 2007-09-14 04:10:00 The FSB on the C2D's is Quad pumped(performs 4 transfers per clock tick) as you already know, thus you divide the FSB that Intel advertises by 4 to get the true speed of the FSB. So the actually FSB of a chip running at 1333 is 333MHz.

The same applies with DDR and DDR2 but instead of 4 transfers per clock tick its 2. Thus DDR800 actually runs at 400MHz, and would give you 66MHz head room when paired with a new C2D with the faster 1333MHz FSB.

Ideally when overclocking you want to running the FSB of the CPU and Memory in a ration of 1:1. Meaning that for every 1MHz you increase the CPU FSB you also increase the Memory FSB. Running the memory slowing than the CPU creates a bottleneck and running it faster offers little performance gain with tighter timings being a better option.
