590987 2007-09-14 01:05:00 Hi Guys, my first post so be gentle with me!! I'm running XP Media Center on an NEC Powermate desktop ( 2 Ghz Athlon, 1Gb Ram etc etc ). My DVD drive is a LG GSA-4165B. More often than not if I put a DVD or CD of any sort in the drive it fails to eject it, either by pressing the eject button or via software, ie the "eject" command when right clicking on the drive in "my computer". Definitely not a mechanical problem. To get the door to open I hit the "sleep" button, let the computer shut down, then wake it up & the drive door opens no problem. Only happens with a disc in the drive by the way.
Anybody got any clues?
Cheers,
KieranT

590988 2007-09-14 01:24:00 Welcome to PressF1 Kierant - Don't worry people here don't bite ( much):D unless you want them to.

Any way I had/have the exact same problem with one of my PC's.

Here is some possible reasons:

Power Plug Lose at rear of drive.
IDE Lose at back of drive.
Failure of laser means drive cannot read disk, windows will lock drive until disk is identified.
Mechanical failure of tray opening mechanism.

I changed drives, cables and in the end it was a power Supply causing problems. Sometimes it would work OK, other times it almost got thrown out the window:mad: Its starting again on the PC so time to do some serious repairs I think. ( 2 months later)

Look at This Site (h10025.www1.hp.com) its for an HP computer, but gives a very good discription and pictures on how to check your PC.

590989 2007-09-14 09:19:00 Well it's definitely not the 3 first possible reasons as when it is in it's non opening state I still have full access to data etc on the DVD/CD. Definitely not a mechanical failure, as putting the computer into standby & then powering it back up, wouldn't have any effect on a mechanical fault.
I'd say it was a software problem, just love to find out what it was.
Thanks for your suggestions anyway.
Now anyone else with any bright ideas?
Cheers,

590990 2007-09-14 11:43:00 I thought it was software at first also - yours may very well be.

I even put another HD in with a fresh install to test it over a weekend, and same problem after a day - Power supply was the cause as I mentioned.

Have you actually checked all connections. Intermittant problems are sometimes hard to track down.

Is there any particular brand of CD/DVD it does it more on ?

590991 2007-09-14 12:39:00 Just a brief update to my above comment - My DVD writer was doing the exact same thing, would read the CD or DVD perfectly ( like yours) the light would flash on the drive tring to open - but simply wouldn't, and yes a reboot did fix it - same problem as you are having.

Not to say it isn't software in your case , it could be ??

Sounds like power related - as an optical drive should open as long as it has power.

When installing a new OS, the drive needs to open to accept a CD/DVD - at that point a HD is empty - no software related problems can happen from a damaged OS.

590994 2007-09-15 04:22:00 It may also be a firmware problem, but I don't think so, if it was then it would usually play up all the time. From what I have read flashing the firmware on this model is hit and miss affair.

Have you tried attaching another DVD writer to the PC and seeing if that does the same thing?

How old is the PC/ Drive
wainuitech (129)
590995 2007-09-16 08:21:00 The PC/Drive is less than 2yrs old. The fault only occurs when a disc is in the drive. It never happens when the drive is empty. So it can't be a power problem. Don't have another drive to check the problem with. kierant (12818)

Have you checked ?

If you have not then you Can't say its isn't a power problem.
Every thing you have replied says you have not ?

If you search the internet, you will see the suggestions above are the most common causes.

As mentioned before my DVD writer did the EXACT same thing yours is doing - and in my case it WAS the Power supply. No DVD/CD in drive - opened every time - Disk in = problems like yours.

But you need to check these things suggested other wise you wont get anyware.

The Drive may be faulty as well - hence the suggestion of trying another drive.

I've looked back here and I see I'm the only one answering your problem but 161 people have looked at the post - this ususally means that the suggested fix is what may be wrong, or the suggestions are not tried so no other help is given ( generally) Sometimes you have to rule out 1 thing at a time - then you will get someplace.
