590844 2007-09-13 12:15:00 My Father has had his computer for only 4 days and it's dead.
Looks like he put a teatowel over the top of the computer, but also blocked
the fans.
By blocking the fans on the PSU. what sort of damage are we looking at ?
Will the motherboard be OK ?

590845 2007-09-13 14:26:00 Overheating probably. Th extent of the damage really depends on how long the computer allowed itself to run and at what temperature before initiating an emergency shutoff or dying. Take it into a PC shop so they can look at all the components so you don't cause any further damage by only replacing a few items etc. beeswax34 (63)
590846 2007-09-13 19:17:00 Take it back, ask them for a replacement; just don't mention the tea-towel :)

And tell your father not to put anything over his computer again

It may have damaged other components, it may not.

590849 2007-09-13 21:14:00 i would be suprised if the teatowel blocked the vents. the psu exhaust vent usually has power leads next to it which would hold the towel out. other than that the main vent is bottom front.

take it back.

btw what pc brand/shop is it ?

Exactly - there are front intakes, side intakes, and as mentioned above the leads would hold open the rear vent, and it blows hot air out, so it would want to push any cloth obstruction out the way, not suck it in.
I doubt it was a teatowel that blew it, unless the whole PC was wrapped in it ( big Teatowel), and even then the auto saftey shutdown in the CPU stopping it from over heating should have turned it off.

I suspect a power surge would do more damage than a teatowel. - Take it back.

Will the motherboard be OK ?PSU overheating will normally only damage the PSU - the computer will shut itself down when heating gets to a critical level, so I doubt the mobo will have suffered. And as above, yeah it sounds like a manufacturer or supplier fault is the problem - take it back.
