| 590693 | 2007-09-13 01:15:00 | When you boot a computer what parts are used to read the hard drive ie memory motherboard ? The reason I ask is my Windows XP Pro ( New install with no other software installed) has started to go so slow in bringing up info stored on the hard drive and I wonder what is breaking down inside my computer that I need to replace. Often I get program not responding and the computer freezes after I close open windows and I either have to reboot or wait up to 2 minutes when all seems well again until the next freeze up. I assume I have something not working as it should and I wonder if there is a simple way to discover what it is rather than take it to a servicman and have him spend a lot of expensive time on it when it is so inexpensive to replace motherboards hard drives etc . Thanks for any advise or help |

With regard to you problem, it could be that your hard drive is high fragmented. Use disk defragmenter to see if the drive needs to be defragged and once you do it your performance could increase... of course the other side of the coin is that your hard drive may be on it's last legs and may need to be replaced. | 590695 | 2007-09-13 03:35:00 | How old is your hard drive? If it is only a few years old, you shouldn't need to worry about failure (hopefully) You should defrag it. Download and use the O&O Defragger (www.oo-software.com) and do a Complete Access Defragment. This defrag will put all the most recently accessed/used files at the start of your hard drive making access a bit faster. Also if you computer is running slow, do you have AV or antispyware etc. software installed? |

| 590696 | 2007-09-13 04:15:00 | Windows XP already does this "disk optimisation" . NTFS is less affected by fragmentation than the various flavours of FAT . The most likely cause of slow booting is software, not hardware . |

Keep pressing Press F8 on startup - select Safe mode, this will load the system without some drivers - just the basic ones, see if it loads fast. If it does then its more than likely software related someplace. If it still loads slow, then you will need to start looking at hardware. You can also try - Some programs will still work in safe mode, so try them and see if you still get freezing. If things work fast and dont freeze in safe mode its a high chance its drivers causing the problems. |

| 590698 | 2007-09-13 05:22:00 | Download and install HijackThis (www.trendsecure.com). Post the log in here, and we can have a look to see what else may be the problem. Chances are with that freezing etc. you are experiencing, you may have some spyware etc. that needs cleaning out. |

Can I assume by your reply it would appear my hard disk is on the way put and needs replacing or is there any way I can do a check on the state of the disk apatr from defrag . Thanks |

| 590701 | 2007-09-13 08:08:00 | If I remove all and do a new install of XP and only load latest drivers and only firewall and anti virus plus printer I still get this problem so I cant understand how software could be the problem. I have used cleaners to remove spyware done defrag checkdisk checked drive for errors and still this problem appears which surely must indicate a hardware problem somewhere but what to replace ie memory motherboard hard drive cup or do I buy a new computer. Thanks |

| 590702 | 2007-09-13 08:15:00 | The memory's easy to check download Memtest from my SIG, Burn the ISO you downloaded to a CD, ISO Image Burner also in my sig if you dont have one. Then boot PC from theCD and run Memtest. That will tell you if the Memorys OK or not. |
