590474 2007-09-12 08:52:00 something i noticed while i was updating my laptop (running ubuntu) which is configured to use NZ mirrors for faster downloading, seemed to go at full rate around 1mb/sec connected thru orcon DSL service. i was like OMG whooppeee 500MB of updates came down instantly.

Now doing the same on the computer and its running at 10kb/sec peak/offpeak but when i configure the OS to use aussie mirrors, they come down as fast as my line allows them and i am connected using Xtra Go Large

what gives? why is it that at g/fs house off/on peak the speed is constant (or +/- 100kb/sec) but at home its dead slow?

is it because Xtra not part of that link thing they have where as orcon is? to allow faster access to local servers? someone please lemme knw

cheers,
Xavier.

590475 2007-09-12 09:28:00 Welcome to PressF1 NMFXavier :D (Aren’t you from telescum?, this is SsSs :))

Let me get this correct.

When using your g/f internet connection (which I guess is with orcon) you/she gets (or +/- 100kb/sec) & when you do it with your Xtra Go Large connection you get 10kb/sec is that correct?

A few things to keep in mind:

With Xtra any local traffic goes leaves NZ & then come back in before it gets to the local server.

I think with Orcon any local traffic stays local & does not leave NZ unless it is overseas.

Also don’t forget Xtra does do a lot of traffic management on Go Large, so that could explain why your g/f gets better download speeds then you.

Also your exchange could be overloaded or is not in that great of a shape ( that is if your g/f is not connected to the same one as you)

Hope this is of some help :)

590476 2007-09-12 11:29:00 I too am on the Go Large plan and experience similar irritations.
I would try downloading between 11pm and 6am as this is when xtra seems to be the fastest.
During 3pm - 8pm it is soo slow that i have even had Google time out on me.

Xtra sucks eggs - seriously!

You two must be unlucky ones, as I have not all many problems with Xtra Go Large at all. (I have even been able to get about 200 - 300 KB/s on most local downloads e.g. from TVNZ ondemand & from Web Drive here in Auckland & have been able to get 100 – 200 KB/s download speed via FTP ( which I was never able to do, in till only in the last month or so)

We won’t talk about overseas / Australia speeds thought ;) :yuck: :annoyed: :waughh:

To me that sounds like your exchange is overloaded or there is a problem somewhere near you.

590478 2007-09-12 23:41:00 stu161204, spot on aren't ya with the aliases, good for ya homie :)

basically, at the g/fs place, local downloads go around 1mb/sec
at home the local downloads go around 10kb/sec regardless of time of day

i thought it was congestion so i checked my exchange, no i didn't rob the transfield guy, just checked it while i was working at xtra :).

nothing's changed. got some peeps at work who i still talk to, to check and nope, still the same.

ah weellss.. you cant have your pie and the cream right? :P.

thanks anyways.
