591417 2007-09-15 11:30:00 I have a desktop computer with a 15.5 inch LCD monitor and the monitor seems to have lost its light. When the computer is on you can just see the things on the screen (really dark). Has the light in the screen blown? how cheap is it to fix, or is it better to buy a new one? spaceman8815 (4112)

They are uneconomical to fix. Even if the backlight blows in a brand new LCD monitor, or within a 3 year warranty, they will always replace it, as it is uneconomical to repair. You would also be talking in the hundred of dollars to fix, if they can get the parts.

You can't make aquariums out of LCDs, only CRTs. :p

591421 2007-09-15 21:15:00 We've had a few lose their backlights at work and they just replaced the entire monitor with a new one. Being a 15" I guess yours is not under warranty anymore? Jen (38)

There has been feedback from other members complaining about this sort of thing.

No it is not under the warrant, its about 3 years old, just outside the warranty period.

I found here (www.inventgeek.com) That you can replace the light your self for less than US$20. How easy is this done in new Zealand ? or is it still better to get a new monitor, as we can't really afford it, so it it better to replace it with a CRT monitor (are they cheaper or the same price?)

591425 2007-09-15 22:35:00 I have no idea of the availability of the parts required to fix a dud backlight in NZ.

A new 17" CRT costs around the $180 mark. A new 17" LCD starts from around $250.

You could buy a second hand monitor from Trademe, but make sure it was local to save $ on postage.

Incredibly difficult . An LCD monitor contains a heck load of VERY fragile cables and components
