591371 2007-09-15 03:05:00 Hey guys I needed some help.

Earlier I downloaded a small program, It was kinda like everest, but it starts with a B. It basically tells you about your PC eg. how much ram your using, how many ram slots are free, how many are used etc.. about ur PC. I'm looked online, so far haven't found the sony site, which TELLS you what each model has..

My labtop model is Sony: PCG-9P6L

I'm asking, because I just bought a laptop off someone and wanted to upgrade the ram on it, but don't know what ram it takes or if a slot is free.

Also, anyone know how to change the pass for a laptop? It askes for 2 passes, once for windows XP and another JUST for turning the laptop on. I am able to access the Win XP, the owner game me the pass and I was able to change it. However, there seems to be another pass earlier when you turn it on. Could it be a bios pass?

Easiest way to find out about the RAM is to unscrew the backcover where the RAM is, it is usually only couple of screws holding it. You will have to open it up to put the RAM in anyway.

The first password is probably set in your CMOS/BIOS, different PC has different key for bring that up (F2 or DEL is quite common). You can press Esc when the Company logo comes up and the key required is usually listed on the screen before XP starts booting.

YEP! that's the program belarc!

I wanted to use it, to see if I have more than 1 ram slot.. and since I cannot find any manuals or manufacture details of the laptop.. is one reason why I wanted to use belarc. I don't know what # of ram it uses.. either..

Thanks for the help, appreciate it a lot :)

591374 2007-09-15 03:55:00 Your laptop is actually the SONY VAIO PCG-K15 (PCG-9P6L)

Here is the Full Specs (www.docs.sony.com) Its a PDF File Here is the Manual (www.docs.sony.com) PDF Download & Here (esupport.sony.com) is the home page for that model.

As for the passwords, the first one may be a BIOS password, if you can enter it, then go into the BIOS and some place there will be the option to disable that function - The user name password is the same thing, go into the control panel / user accounts, select the account and remove password.

Thanks for the manuals. I didn't know these 2 models were the same or similar. Based off the specs though, unless my laptop has been modified already, some of those things are not installed or are different.

I don't think the laptop has a GFX card, since it eats it from the ram I believe. My HD seems bigger too.

RIght now my main concern is to upgrade the ram, win XP shows it at 450MB or so..(don't remember the exact number) but not quite 512MB. So I'm hoping to max it out to 1GB, since I wanted to run programs like photoshop.

591376 2007-09-15 04:47:00 RAM comes in the following sizes (depending on type, SD DDR DDR1 DDR2 DDR3)
32Mb 64Mb 128Mb 256Mb 512Mb 1024Mb 2048Mb

If you only have 1 stick of RAM installed and its showing around the 450 area, then it will be 512Mb as the onboard Graphics will be using some of it.

The basic model supplied can have many different setups, so the spec's shown are not always accurate to your system. The general layout should be the same though. Look what you have now in the way of RAM and try to get the same as if you get the wrong stuff it may not work. Eg: same Speed etc.

Wehn looking for the model as you supplied thats what I found SONY VAIO PCG-K15 (PCG-9P6L) about 3-4 times from different places.

591377 2007-09-15 06:51:00 well i used belarc and it seems like I have 2 Ram slots with 256 each.. though I don't know the ram type eg. # since rams have # like 1300 or 2400 etc..

I'm wondering if I should get 2 512's or 1 512 and keep 1 256... It's kinda of a waste to get 2 512's and just have 2 256's lying there.. unless someone wants them or 1 of them.. I don't think I can use them anywhere else either.. eg. desktop, since it won't match.

591378 2007-09-15 07:10:00 That's the stink thing with upgrading RAM, they usually use two sticks instead of one leaving you a crappy upgrade path. sal (67)

CPU-Z (www.cpuid.com) Will tell you all about your CPU, Mainboard and RAM. it will tell you what type, speed, brand etc of RAM that you have.

true, but if I had another laptop or a way to not waste the ram while upgrading, that would help . It's lame that they use 2, 256's . . and not just one 512 . . . manufactures could make it easier for us . . .
