2007-09-14 02:18:00 | Trying to fix one of these (h20000.www2.hp.com) Was going ok, UNTIL one of the people who were using it decided to install blody Limewire! The other day, I used trojan remover, which removed some entries relating to malware and a few worms. The laptop WAS working fine then. Then I gave it back last night, and the mate couldnt get on the net. So, I got it back this morning. The prob now, is as soon as it gets to the login screen, it crashes usually with 00000008E (this could be due to one of the worms, that were on it), or 5C. And there is NO way I'm going to get into it, by selecting normal XP, safe mode, or using the last known good config. On all 3, it crashes. I dont think the person made recovery CD's/DVD's.. Coz, I didnt get them, when the laptop came back. And I cant use a floppy (coz I dont have a floppy, and the hdd on this thing is SATA)! So: 1. Is there any way of stopping it during login? If so, how? 2. Since, I dont use floppies on these, and the HP install file wont work with the USB flash drive, to extract the SATA drivers to, does anyone have any other bright ideas, on HOW I can get into XP, before it crashes? 3. Some kind of cd I could use (somehow) so it can boot into DOS, so I can edit maybe one of the startup files? Which maybe causing the crashing. 4. If I use my XP Pro cd to do a system repair, would it work?? And I dont fancy downloading most of those files from the above site on dialup!

2007-09-14 02:29:00 | Try plugging the hard drive into your computer & scanning it. see if you can change the SATA mode in the bios. If not, you will have to get a USB floppy drive, or integrate the drivers into your XP CD.

2007-09-14 02:48:00 | There's a few ways you could go about it. You could boot the laptop off a BartPE (www.nu2.nu) CD, which would let you move files about, and maybe even fix the problem if you're lucky (it has regedit etc). You might have network support, depending on if there are drivers for the network controller built in to BartPE or not. There usually aren't for laptops. I'd just reinstall Windows personally. In this case I would boot PartPE (or WinPE) and rename the Documents and Settings, Windows, and Program Files folders so that Windows Setup ignores them. Then just use the right CD (XP Home or Pro OEM, whatever is on the COA) to install Windows, making sure not to format the drive. Once that's done, just copy over what you want at your leisure from your renames Documents and Settings folder and go from there. Edit: What kind of CD is your XP Pro CD? OEM, Retail or Corporate? It will ask for a CD key when you try to repair it, so you have to use the same kind as the laptop's license is. I use a 9-in-1 CD with all of them on it (uses a really interesting way to fit 9 XPs on one CD). Edit #2: If the problem is that it needs SATA drivers to install Windows, which it sounds like it is after re-reading your post, that's a bit more tricky. You would probably need to integrate them into the CD.

2007-09-14 02:57:00 | I'm seeing things here Speedy needing help - Holy Cr*p:eek: See if you can get into "safe Mode with Command prompt" it starts to load windows (as in safe mode with drivers) then up pops the command prompt window, no desktop. If you can try doing a restore back a couple of days it may be able to at least get it going in safe mode so you can fix it in a GUI. If you can get into the command prompt the full path you want is C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe ( enter) I have found you have to do the CD for it to work. Eg: C:\documents and settings --etc CD C:\ from C:\ cd windows C:\windows CD system32 C:\windows\system32 CD Restore you get the picture- untill you end up in the restore folder C:\windows\system32\restore Then rstrui.exe ( enter) Nothing happens for a few seconds then POP theres the restore window, restore as normal. This doesn't work from the CD - I Tried Have you tried an XP CD and boot into the recovery console from it ? About one of the few times you would select the first R on a CD boot.

If not, you will have to get a USB floppy drive, or integrate the drivers into your XP CD. Good idea!, didnt think of that duh. Thats what I'm doing atm. I've unplugged the hdd from the laptop, and its scanning with Avast on this PC now. It picked up one trojan, which I've deleted and still scanning the rest of the hdd right now, as i type. I did manage to extract the SATA drivers from the Winimage image from the HP site. You guessed it, I used Winimage, and copied the drivers to the usb flash. Dont know, if it worked, it looked like it was hanging on a certain part, when I booted from my XP CD. So, thats when I killed it, and took the SATA out of the laptop and connected it to this. I'll wait for Avast to finish scanning, then put the hdd back in the laptop, and then see what happens. Thanx for the info guys! I'll let u know what happens. I couldnt get into safemode with networking or command prompt, should have said this in the first post, it crashed too. |

2007-09-14 06:55:00 | lol, WELL. As above I took the SATA out of the laptop put it on this, and NO WONDER it was having probs. Avast found a mixture of worms and trojans and adware, totalling...wait for it... 138! So, now its stuffed, still crashes with Stop 0x0000007E. On some sites it says press F11 to restore the system, Well, it would be nice, IF it actually did something. It does jack. As above, since I havent got a floppy I cant put my XP cd in, so setup looks for the SATA drivers. I managed to copy the ISO's to this PC (so it says 11 of them)! for the recovery DVD. Which is a fat lot of use, I dont have DL blanks lol. (All of the ISO's are just over 6 GB). And I'm NOT wasting 11 blank cd's for 11 ISO's lol. So..........the saga continues.
