591243 2007-09-19 10:43:00 So, have u got anything else thats wireless?

If you havent then you cant use the wireless option.

You have to get some ethernet cable for whatever and then configure the network.

I've given up on the wireless thing but ethernet is proving to be just as difficult....I Bought a new Lan card but still cant connect laptop to PC via crossover cable...it says limited or no conectvity..the same message as the old Lan card

Ive tried the network setup wizard, installed the XP - Vista recognition thing and i'm now about ready to just throw it all out the window !

591244 2007-09-19 10:54:00 Ive tried the network setup wizard

DON'T use the wizard, 99% out of 100, it doesnt WORK.

Double click on the LAN icons and give them ip's. I dont know what you put in for wireless modems, I've never had one, most probably never will have one :D

Make sure the workgroup names ARE the same (change XP's to Vista's default workgoup name).

How do you give them Ip's ? and what is a suitable IP ?!

591247 2007-09-19 21:20:00 No, the suite on the PC will definitely NOT cover the laptop unless you're moving files between them and just that. You will definitely need to buy ZA for the laptop.

If I may make a suggestion, get Avast Home AV and wait for Comodo to release their firewall for Vista. They are both free and MUCH better than ZA.

that's your (sucky) opinion.

ZoneAlarm Pro is what I use and it owns. (another opinion)

591248 2007-09-19 21:55:00 ZA Pro is a good firewall & ranks up the top with Comodo, Outpost & a couple others.

ZA Free however, ranks down near the bottom with XP's firewall - avoid it.

Recent leaktest results (www.matousec.com) or this old one (www.firewallleaktester.com).

591249 2007-09-19 22:03:00 And WHAT'S the diff between ZA free and Pro, besides paying for it.

Nothing.

591250 2007-09-20 11:56:00 OK i managed to get back online with the PC using the wireless modem via the ethernet cable...to hell with file sharing ! i'll just burn all my music to DVDs !

All i want now (which i could do before i started on the futile file share network thing) is to use the laptop wirelessly for the net....i dont know how i got it working before but its not playing ball anymore

Anything i should be checking ?

591251 2007-09-20 14:33:00 Are the passwords (network keys) the same, whether your modem is broadcasting or not and thus you have already set up your laptop to connect to the hidden network etc etc. beeswax34 (63)

What a bloody laff this internet technology buisness is...I stumbled upon file sharing while trying to get wireless internet access only to find it would take 8 and a half hours to copy 20GB of music (forget it !)

so i'm still left with no wireless connection :badpc: and wondering what everyone is talking about..
