1.Sever crashed
2.Got hacked
3.The company collapsed
4.They go through and look at/share/make copies of your stuff without you knowing.

A 500GB harddrive for $169.00 on www.pricespy.co.nz is good enough and you just get a portable caddie for like $40.00 to put it in and use fire wire/usb to connect it to your pc and then copy/backup whatever you want and your all good, sweet as.Heck you could put it in a container/box label it and all that stuff and put it in the garage and then copy/backup whenever you want.

smugmug is a stayer. They have a strong active community and harbor many post-yahoo flickr users.

Remote server backup as a service isn't too bad of an idea. There's some reputable services out there, a big list of file hosts can be found here (mashable.com) (the first section being most relevant), although I would say almost half of those pay-for services are probably as reliable as you'd expect with their less than assuring names, but there's a couple like the free box.net ( Most offer a premium service at different costs, sometimes only a one-time payment. If you're really serious bout this, Mozy (http://mozy.com/home" target="_blank">www.box.net/) that I can say are legit as. Most offer a premium service at different costs, sometimes only a one-time payment. If you're really serious bout this, Mozy (http:) might be worth a look, it used to be free but got really popular so they charge a monthly $US5 for unlimited backup.

But of all of them, JungleDisk (www.jungledisk.com/) is probably the most reliable of the lot, making it no secret that you'll be treated to Amazon S3 (http:) service at .15c US per GB, probably THE most secure and reliable file storage available anywhere.

So once you've decided where to back-up online, just make sure you've got lots of bandwidth for the "back-up"...
