591033 2007-09-14 07:00:00 may sound unusual but has worked for in the past push the esc key and keep pressed untill you get the login screen

Thats where it crashes, it gets into XP ok, it's when the log in is about to appear it crashes.

591034 2007-09-14 07:29:00 Speedy, the laptop bios should have a setting called 'native SATA support' or similar (my compaq does anyway). It is probably enabled. If you set it to disabled, ir will trick windows into thinking its an IDE drive, and XP setup can see it fine.

[EDIT: Just had a look, and it's called "SATA Native Support"]

Cant remember seeing a SATA option in the BIOS. I've been in there 3-4 times now.

I'll check again in a sec.

591036 2007-09-14 07:55:00 If there is no option there, your only choice may be to create a new XP CD with the SATA drivers integrated. nLite (http://www.nliteos.com/) will help out here. (it can also do a whole lot more!!) Sherman (9181)
591037 2007-09-14 07:55:00 You have more than likely tried this but just in case, are you able to try and rebuild the NTLDR and NTDECT files from any point, if thats of any use, or even replace them via connecting the drive to your working PC.

Also 1 thing that worked a while back once or twice - was attach the damaged drive back to the working PC, go into My Computer, right click the damaged drive / properties, Under Tools, tell it to check for errors.

Thats a good point, I'll do that shortly. I'll replace NTLDR and NTDECT.

And see what happens then.

591039 2007-09-14 09:19:00 Nup, connected it again, scanned for errors, nothing.

Defragged, it was 50 % fragmented, that finished, still crashed.

I'll have to ring HP for a recovery DVD or burn these 11 ISO's to a DL blank.

11 CD's

Just a warning, The HP recovery process takes a Very Long Time - even using my DVD's!!

Alternatively if you have an XP pro CD, or access to one, you could create a new XP CD that has the drivers (including SATA) already on the CD, like I said earlier .

Yup 11 cd's :waughh: Well there's 11 ISO's.

I could do a cd with Nlite, just haveta remember if I use Nero (Well I'll have to, thats the only program Ive got), what the load segment of sectors (hex) value is. Otherwise it wont boot.

nLite should let you include the boot sector from the original XP disc in the iso it produces.
I know that when I did it, I burned the iso straight to CD and it boots fine.

BTW, I believe you about the 11 CD's.... My compaq required two single layer DVD's
