591735 2007-09-16 09:34:00 Hello Friends,

I am having real troubles with my PC (MoBo ECSPT800CE-A, PIV 2MHz, 512 ram PC400, generic PS2 keyboard, etc)

If I turn the PC off, it will not start up again unless It reset the Bios. I does not detect keyboard, nor memory nor HD, in those occasions it only detects MoBo and video card. When I reset the bios, sometimes it will come up and it will work quite well several days (because then I will not shut it down).

I think I need a new MoBo. Any advice?, thanks so much in advance! :-)

591736 2007-09-16 09:46:00 Hi, Welcome to PressF1 :)

I take it you mean Windows (?XP) will not load unless you reset the BIOS? What sort of error messages do you see? Do you hear the system beeping in any sort of pattern?

591737 2007-09-16 10:04:00 Jen, thank you for answer my question.

Yes, XP will not load not any other. I have GRUB with dual boot Linux ubuntu 7.04 / Win XPSP2. When I start the machine the screen will show video card identification, then MoBo identification, then a low single bit and nothing more. No keyboard, no memory, no HDs, so the screen does not reach GRUB stage.

591738 2007-09-16 10:14:00 Have you replaced the CMOS battery since getting the computer? It is a small round (about 15mm dia) flat battery that fits onto the motherboard. If it is flat, then that could explain why your BIOS is losing the settings. Jen (38)
591739 2007-09-16 10:23:00 No I have not replaced the battery. The MoBo is only 2 years old; but I will replace it and then will give a try to the machine. Thanks a lot Jen for your so kind advice. As soon as I do this I will give you the result. emmerc (12836)
591740 2007-09-16 11:42:00 The CMOS battery is quite unpredictable. I had one last 7 years without any problems whatsoever and one packed it in after about a year so definitely give that a go.

Just be VERY careful when opening your case and handling any components. Ground yourself and watch out for all the sharp edges:D

591742 2007-09-17 05:30:00 Hello Friends! I am back after struggling 1 1/2 hours to get my PC on after installing a brand new cmos battery. Sadly I have to say you that after installing a new cmos battery the problem is still the same. I had to reset the MoBo two or three times before the machine came up. Probably I should buy an ASUS MoBo as pctek says ;-). Now I am writing this post from the machine once it came up. And as usual, once on, it behaves quite well until for some reason I have to shut it down. Thanks a lot folks for all your support and suggestions. emmerc (12836)
