591388 2007-09-15 07:01:00 I have a 12 year old who is showing lots of interest in computer animation. Has been working away at making small movie sequences by using Pivot 2.2, also has experimented with taking 100s of photos of lego action and then importing them all into movie maker to make animated Lego sequences. Lots of fun!
I wondered if others have experince with animation software - preferably free downloads - so that I can point him onto another level.

591389 2007-09-15 07:09:00 Animation software yes, not so sure about free downloads though although you could try a Google search.
generally though stuff like Maya costs a bit.
You could try using Adobe Flash.

591390 2007-09-15 07:19:00 Blender (http://www.blender.org/) is quite a popular freeware app for 3D animation but I've never used it. sal (67)
591391 2007-09-15 08:08:00 I use Paint Shop Pro 7 - Animation Shop. About $NZ300. Oldferix (5581)

This is an open source site.

Has some 3-D software also.

Tales Animator looks OK depending on what level you want.

591394 2007-09-15 09:19:00 Have checked out Blender - it looks a bit complicated....will try some of the freeware ones. Thanks

Do you know where we can download Flash? Are there older versions around that are free - a 30 day trial isn't going to work for us as its really expensive to buy

591395 2007-09-15 10:15:00 There are heaps out there. Some free ones -

A very small, relatively simple 3d program is Anim8tor (www.anim8or.com)

A paint program which can do animation quite easily is Dogwaffle (www.thebest3d.com)

Another free 3d prgram, not simple but possibly easier to start with than blender is OpenFX (http://www.openfx.org/)

Flash isn't free although you might be able to pick up and old copy of trademe if someone is selling theirs. As a rule professional grade apps cost money.

591397 2007-09-15 21:12:00 Gill My Daughter went along to school holiday programs run by Bubbledome. She has done about 3 now and they teach on Blender and Bryce3D. A combination of both was a good starting point for her and she has learned a lot of basics on those two programs so far and almost ready to move onto something more sophisticated.

They run several types of courses, Game making 3D animation etc at Epson Girls Grammer Auckland during the holidays. They do get a big turn out each time.
