591858 2007-09-17 02:36:00 Looking to run a WAMP server on a spare PC, a quick wiki shows there are a lot of options. Can anyone recommend an easy and simple package?

Cheers

591859 2007-09-17 06:01:00 Uniform Server (http://uniformserver.com/) is brilliant if you're just after a basic dev package. It also has the advantage of running off a USB key if you want to do that :D.

What exactly do you want to use the server for? Local development of a PHP/MySQL site?

Yeah just some local development, and wanted to have a play with Drupal. Think ill start with XAMPP and see how that goes.

Was considering a LAMP setup but the PC I'm going to use also does double duty as my file server and I cant get the RAID controller to work under linux, maybe one day I'll get round to fixing it.

591865 2007-09-17 11:24:00 Bletch whats is Uniform Server like? It's excellent, but lacks extensions (pear etc) although I think the devs were doing so work towards supplying them as plugins. If all you want is a basic, solid WAMP setup with no funny business then I'd highly recommend it. The packages are also usually very up to date. Last time I looked it took up about 7MB of space.

If you need fancy features then I'd recommend XAMMP, or maybe even try rolling your own.

Even better, go with LAMP :D.
