| 592401 | 2007-09-22 10:22:00 | I have a Sony DVD cam and had similar problems to yourself initially. There were very few applications available when the DVD cameras first became available that would actually edit mpeg2. Most applications required you to transcode each clip to .avi or something first (a very tedious task) you could then edit away happily with most software. Ironically your DVD authoring software would then have to change it back to mpeg2 as a part of burning process if that was your desired outcome. This did lead to a certain loss of quality with each recode. I currently use Nerovision and I have the extra plugins for mpeg2 and dolby 5.1 sound. It does the job for me - ie basic cuts and joining with a few transitions (which I don't often use) It then lets me put it all onto a dvd with menus etc. It uses "smart encoding" so that it only recodes where you have edited so there is little loss of quality. It is not able to make adjustment to the lighting etc or do really flash stuff (although I have not really explored it all) but I don't know of any affordable program that can do that to mpeg2. I did look at a couple of other applications a couple of years back but cannot really comment on latest versions. Good luck |

It's worth clarifying for other users reading this thread that iMovie DOES NOT support MPEG natively. Apple did not splash for the licence until the latest iMovie'08 - and even then it requires importing direct from the camera (with format conversion and the loss of any surround sound recording). A Quicktime MPEG2 plugin ($50) from Apple might also enable editing but I haven't tried it... iMovie will edit DV (as in MiniDV/Digital8) natively but to use any version prior to the very latest one with a DVD/HDD camera you will need to convert the video first (try homepage.mac.com for pre-08 iMovie versions). |

| 592406 | 2007-09-25 04:40:00 | Joe_exception advice did get me to where I could view thumbnails of my movie clips in Picture Motion Browser, but I didn't seem to be able to accomplish anything beyond that, especially since I did not want to burn a DVD; I wanted instead to build the movie with fades and edits to the existing footage, and I couldn't work out how to do that. Since WMM seemed a bit more intuitive to operate I decided to download the codec from Stinky. So I clicked on the link and did just that. Then when I ran MPEG-2.EXE it complained that codec files not found to install, which was lost on me completely, so I clicked OK and the next objection was you must fully unzip this program to run the installer. Well, I thought I had unzipped it; otherwise surely I wouldnt be looking at the exe file plus the two ax files and the txt file? So I clicked OK again and got you cannot run this program from within WinZip program will end now. So be it I clicked OK. Still no further forward . I had a look at Vegas. At $189.95 (presumably US) its a bit more than I want/can pay. Its so frustrating Ive already got WMM, which looks able to do what I want, and looks pretty simple to run, but I cant use the mpg files from my HDD Handycam (note this Handycam has a hard drive: it is not high definition). Oh, and the Platinum edition is $259.95. Computers are wondrous things when they work but infuriating when they apparently wont. Can nobody provide the secret to life, the universe and everything?? Perhaps it really is 42! I perceive that my task is essentially not on the rocket science category, so why does it have to be so darned difficult |
