2007-10-22 02:01:00 | Well here's what I did Originally threw it all together with a generic 400W PSU (20pin + 4pin) and with both plugs plugged in the CPU fan spun up for about three seconds then shut itself down. Unplugging the 4pin plug the CPU fan spins up and continues to spin. No shut down until manually shut down. Thought maybe dodgy PSU or mobo. Swapped for another generic 400W PSU (20pin + 4pin) with exactly the same results. Thought maybe the generic PSU's weren't supplying enough power so pulled my machine to bits and took out my Silverstone 500W PSU (24pin) and chucked that in there. Exactly the same result. I think I have dome enough testing to rule out teh PSU as the problem, leaving me with the motherboard. Time to send it back me thinks? DUring these tests I also pulled my PCIe graphics card out of my machine and chucked it in the new one but still no go. Tried changing the ram slots as I read there may be some issues there but still no go. As an aside there have never been any bios beeps when doing these tests. Cheers for everyones suggestions unless somenone has anything else I haven't tried! PS - Makes no difference at all if the ram is installed or not. Possible faulty ram?

Have you tried clearing the bios settings at all? if it was ram error I would expect it to beep, if everything else was working fine.. probably is a motherboard issue of sorts |

2007-11-12 02:28:00 | Well sent the mobo back and received a nice shiny new one. Installed everything and bingo - nothing - exactly the same symptoms as before. This one has got me!!! Any more suggestions? Ta in advance.

2007-11-12 02:51:00 | You can try this but be VERY CAREFUL not to damage anything - remove the MB, PSU, HD from the case, assemble the PC on the bench, only need to have the PSU, CPU, HD, RAM, Monitor keyboard/mouse attached. Use onboard graphics if it has them. Dont need Optical drive. Look at the manual, and see what two pins are the power Pins. CAREFULLY short the two pins with a small screwdriver, this will boot the board - if it starts up OK, and doesn't shut down then there is something shorting on the case when every thing is installed. you may need some sort of insulating washers on the case risers. CHECK to make sure the Risers are in the right place in relation to the mounting holes on the Board also. If it still gives problems turn off and disconnect the HD - Try again. That really only leaves two other things as pctek suggested. Dead RAM. Dead CPU.

2007-11-12 02:53:00 | yeah what PCTEK said, also read the MB book carefully / check the website to see if the CPU is compatible with the MB. looking here, it's not on the list support.asus.com Make sure the RAM is the right type / speed for the MB Make sure the CPU fan is the 3wire type so the MB can sense the RPM's and is plugged into the right connector. Maybe try switching connectors with a case fan if a spare output is available. ( a fan MUST be plugged into the CPU fan connector for the board to start. ) If the MB has jumpers for FSB settings make sure they are set correctly ( unusual to have these days ) Would also have suggested clearing the BIOS, but having the same symptoms on a 2nd board suggests it's something else.

2007-11-12 02:56:00 | another though just occurred, check the MB manual for thermal protection settings, I'm not sure at what point but some AMD CPU's didn't support the thermal shutdown feature and need it to be disabled on the MB | dugimodo (138) | |
2007-11-12 03:06:00 | Wow - super quick replies!!! Dead RAM. Dead CPU. I have swapped out for some RAM which I know works (out of a machine that runs fine) and same problem. Discount the RAM I think. CPU - leaning towards this as my only possibility. yeah what PCTEK said, also read the MB book carefully / check the website to see if the CPU is compatible with the MB. CPU definitely compatible. Make sure the RAM is the right type / speed for the MB Definitely right type & speed of RAM. Make sure the CPU fan is the 3wire type so the MB can sense the RPM's and is plugged into the right connector. All good here. Would also have suggested clearing the BIOS Done that - same thing happens. but having the same symptoms on a 2nd board suggests it's something else. Me too - damn it! You can try this but be VERY CAREFUL not to damage anything - remove the MB, PSU, HD from the case, assemble the PC on the bench, only need to have the PSU, CPU, HD, RAM, Monitor keyboard/mouse attached. Use onboard graphics if it has them. Dont need Optical drive. Might be my last try before RMAing the CPU you may need some sort of insulating washers on the case risers. CHECK to make sure the Risers are in the right place in relation to the mounting holes on the Board also. All done already. another though just occurred, check the MB manual for thermal protection settings, I'm not sure at what point but some AMD CPU's didn't support the thermal shutdown feature and need it to be disabled on the MB Wouldn't that be a BIOS setting rather than a motherboard thing?

2007-11-12 03:13:00 | please see the link I added above, CPU is not on the list. May need a BIOS update. No thermal shutdown is normally a jumper as you can't get into the bios if you can't boot :) - I think this is a red herring though sorry.
