593067 2007-09-24 22:25:00 One of the problems I have is an ActiveX issue on IE6, another is "ACPI layer missing", even though all the files are actually there.

That ACPI layer missing error doesnt sound like an IE error/issue.

It sounds like it has something to do with the BIOS.

593068 2007-09-26 09:44:00 Make that ASPI layer....

As I said above, is it likely that an update will fix the problems, or should I do a full install?

593069 2007-09-26 10:19:00 ASPI layer sounds like you need the Adaptec drivers, for your burner.

These (www.adaptec.com)

593070 2007-09-27 00:39:00 According to aspichk.exe I have those.

I am upgrading because of things like this.

For instance, I am told that flash/quicktime are not installed when I know that they are and up to date.

I can't reinstall 98SE because I don't have a disk, but the install files are on the hard drive.

If there are faults in 98SE on my machine, and I am convinced there are, will an upgrade to W2K fix them, or do I need to do clean install?

593071 2007-09-27 00:51:00 It'd be better if u do a clean install, with 2K, if you've got the 2k CD.

Hopefully, its the full version CD.

The install files for 98 MAY be on the hdd, but are these the original files etc??

The same files that would be on the 98 CD?

Not the files AFTER 98 has been installed?

A clean install of 2K / format SHOULD fix any probs.

593072 2007-09-27 22:30:00 The original 98SE files are on the HDD Chris Randal (521)
593073 2007-09-27 22:38:00 The original 98SE files are on the HDD

If its the full version not the 98 SE upgrade, burn them to cd. (Do a bootable CD).

Then if u want to install it again, boot from the CD.

593074 2007-09-27 23:11:00 ACPI if i remember rightly is just power saving stuff for the bios. suspend and hibernate info. not sure. use firefox and ya wont have any IE issues anymore :P ok so not so helpfull. but there are ways around everything. and seeing that you are using Win98 an upgrade is probably best. Weather or not that is to another windows O/S though. Try to upgrade to 2k. either with a format or just the upgrade and see what happens.

although it is wise to back up all data which ever way you do it. better safe than sorry. all else fails. order copies of ubuntu for free :P

593075 2007-09-27 23:18:00 If it's a software problem then a clean installation of any OS should eliminate most issues (unless the issue is due to missing drivers etc).
I was waiting for someone to come in the the Nuke Method.
I have already voiced my opinions on this method, and if you wish to check them out again, here they are (pressf1.co.nz)
