592636 2007-10-21 01:15:00 Hi all

Finally got round to doing something about this. Swapped out for another PSU and exactly the same fault. Without 4 pin ATX12V plugged in everything fires up and the CPU fan etc all spin away merrily (obviously no signal to the monitor). As soon as I plug in the ATX12V plug it will fire up for about 4 seconds then powers down.

Short of sending the mobo back any other suggestions?

Ta.

You did put paste or whatever on it didnt you?

592638 2007-10-21 02:39:00 Sounds like it may also be Overheating.
I looked at the link you gave regarding the board, and it shows onboard Graphics - I assume thats whats being used.

As Speedys suggested, check the CPU is seated OK, and there is a good seal between the CPU and the Heatsink. If you remove the heatsink, you will more than likely need some more thermal paste to reseal the Heatsink.

While this may not prove anything, remove the RAM and see if it protests (beeps) indicating no RAM.
Since the Board is New it may just be DOA - it does happen sometimes, no matter what brand.

592639 2007-10-21 22:23:00 Is your PSU 24 Pin?

Asus says that board may work with 20 pin but may not start

592640 2007-10-21 23:31:00 Both PSU's I tried were 20 pin PSU's. I have had a look everywhere again and can't see anything about a conflict between 20 pin vs 24 pin. Where did you find that info - I wold be interested in reading it.

I an gonna try it with a PCI-e graphics card and then if its still not working I will get hold of a 24pin PSU and see if that makes any difference!

AH - the joys!!!!

592641 2007-10-21 23:54:00 As an aside - has anybody used these (madkiwihosting.co.nz) before? Do you know if it will do the same job (using my current 20 pin PSU) as buying a 24 pin PSU?

Cheers.

592642 2007-10-22 00:48:00 It's a matter of if your PSU can supply enough current to the motherboard, not how many pins it has really.

The point is the new ATX spec with 24 Pins was designed for a reason, personally I think using an adaptor or a 20 pin is not as good although it may still work.

My theory is the PSUs you were using didn't have enough power, but when you removed the AUX 12v connector it started, because the PSU then didn't need to supply all the current the CPU needed, but because the CPU didn't have all the current it needed, the PC still didn't start properly

592643 2007-10-22 01:11:00 The PDF manual for that board says this (www.imagef1.net.nz) about PSUs.

(had to load it in image format, PDF was protected, couldn't copy and paste)

Cheers. I got around 20 of them from a supplier once, I have used some of them in the past, - But not now - I dont know if it was Coincidence but after 4-5 months use Some of the PC's had Power Related problems, then I switched to 24 pin PSU's and they worked OK.

They are cheap enough to try and see if that fixes the problem.

Hell if you want one, PM me with your contact details and I'll post you one for free.
