2007-09-19 05:03:00 | I tried WMM on Vista Home Premium. It did import an mpg, played sound but no video. However, it could create a wmv output file that seemed OK and was editable. So, in effect, it acted as a converter. Not really what I would call a satisfactory solution when wanting to edit video.

2007-09-19 05:10:00 | What exactly is “DVD format”? Most video formats can be played on a standalone DVD player, just as long as theyve been converted somehow or "on the fly' while theyre being burned to the DVD burner. Well MPG may mean Mpeg1 or 2. Re burners, I appear to have Nero 6 Express that does CD’s and DVDs and also ASUSDVD. Are they likely to help in some way? Why do you ask SG? Asus DVD plays DVD's it doesnt BURN them. Well I asked, coz I thought one of them might do what you want. Surely my problem is editing, rather than burning? I’ve burned DVDs before, and they ran on OK my PC and on my TV. The main prob is loading them into a program first, like MM. You have to load them before you can edit them. With some programs like Nerovision, depending on how many mpg files you've got, you can load them all at once, then edit them then burn them. That depends on what kind of DVD's you're going to burn them to (4.7 GB, or dual layer DVD's). Obviously you can only load so much to fill up a DVD. Ulead seem to have a trial version available for free download, so I might give that a go. What do you think? You could try, it depends on WHAT the limitation is. It could be a 30 day trial, or it may apply to something else, like you can only burn files that are so big.

2007-09-19 05:48:00 | If free Ulead limitations are 30days or file size I can still ascertain whether I can load my mpg files and edit and save the movie. The price seems reasonable - and what price all the time I/we have already spent battling WMM limitations??!! | Mike S (1766) | |
2007-09-19 05:50:00 | Mike, how much RAM have you got and what size is your HD? Video editing is very RAM intensive compared to gaming.

2007-09-19 06:07:00 | Well then. One of the things I noticed was:- "I tried blindly un-checking items in WMM Tools -> Options -> Compatibility but when it does let me import mpg files they run with audio but no video." Why did you use the word "blindly"? It appears to me that you have moved or copied a number of videos from your HandyCam to a partition on a hard drive. You then want to import into Windows Movie Maker. Then edit the resultant movies with fades and effects and maybe titles. Now have you checked the manual for your handycam. Possibly your handycam comes with firewire, USB or records to a CD or whatever. Just noticed it is a hard drive. Have you installed software that came with the handycam? And why worry about PoppaJohn? Have you checked all the advice given as to codecs and conversion?

2007-09-20 04:53:00 | I had the same problem with .avi. If you have Nero installed, try uninstalling it, helped for me. Annoying having to uninstall it every time I use WMM though... | Pinkfish (12841) | |
2007-09-20 05:03:00 | Use Nerovision then, it'll load most video formats. Then you wont have to uninstall Nero. Why you have to uninstall Nero when u use WMM, I dont know.

2007-09-21 02:08:00 | Winmacguy asks about the PC Im using: Belarc tells me I have 512 MB DIMM RAM. I have an 80 GB Hard drive divided into 3 partitions C has 5.92 GB free out of 41.94 GB, E has 12.58 GB free out of 20.97 and F has 6.25 GB free out of 17.11 GB. I could (should?) free up more space by transferring a host of jpgs to DVD. Sweep asks why blindly: I went through the options in turn and tried leaving one ticked and the rest blank, without understanding what I was about hence blindly. The Sony DCR SR42 comes with 3 bits of software. Picture Motion Browser seems like a slim impersonation of Picasa, and shows still photos but I cannot find how to show my mpg files. HDD Handycam utility wont start because it says that a necessary file doesnt exist, and Product registration wont run until I give it a program association, which I cannot ascertain how to so do. So not very inspiring; thank heavens the camera works just fine! Sweep, your para beginning it appears is quite correct in summarising my objective, except I dont care whether its WMM or another I use to achieve it. Id also like to minimise what I have to spend to generate my simple short movie. Lastly, I only mention papajohn because for some he seems to be the de facto guru on WMM and quoted by many. My personal view is that WMM is not simple and I bridle at any program that involves so much stuffing around to even begin to edit footage. Papajohns description is inaccurate I think. I thank Pinkfish for his advice, but to me this does rather have the flavour of more stuffing around. Speedy Gonzales suggests Nerovision. The Express version is free, but the accent seems to be on DVD burning rather than movie editing. I can already burn DVDs using the version of Nero I have. .. still seeking the yellow brick road ..

2007-09-21 02:19:00 | What user-friendly mpg-compatible video editing software do others use? I use Ulead VS10 for editing movie files off my Canon S3 IS camera. It seems fine to me, does the whole job from capturing the files off your camera, to burning the DVD or whatever. I haven't tried editing mpg files, but I think it will accept them.

The version of Nerovision (NOT Nero itself), that comes with the latest version of Nero (Well most versions have the option to install it), lets u burn and edit video files (u can cut out scenes you dont want before you burn whatever) you add to it. BUT, as previously posted, some options for NV, you have to pay for, so they appear in Nerovision. There's a few transition / wipe things in NV, and you can download animated menus from the Nero site. Which are pretty good. |
