| 593848 | 2007-09-21 20:10:00 | My brother-in-law informed me last night that he has a laptop that no longer boots. This is what happened: He has 2 laptops, different brand, for different things. He thinks he grabbed one laptop, and inadvertantly plugged in the powersupply from the other laptop into it. He noticed the smell of burning (electrical) so pulled the power supply out. He plugged the correct powersupply in, and the laptop is no go. He said the battery hasn't been able to boot the laptop ever since he can remember, so thats not even worth trying. I suggested highly likely hes fried the mobo, and it wouldn't be worth repairing. (this was an assumption, the laptop is at least 5 years old, and I assume motherboards for laptops to be worth at least 2x the price of a desktop mobo). He doesn't care too much about fixing the laptop, but he would like to get his data off the harddrive, and backed up to CD (various documents etc) Is it likely he has fried the harddrive board as well? Is it worth me even looking at? I have the 2.5 to 3.5 adapter, so actual data transferral is not a problem |

| 593852 | 2007-09-21 21:30:00 | Sounds very much like the Motherboard or part of the power circuit could have fried. As we all know burning electrical is not good at any time. As for replacement MB if it is fried, you are right they can be rather expensive. I was quoted over $450.00 once for a three year old HP - and with the lappy being 5 years old it prob wouldn't be cost effective. Your Idea of removing the hard Drive then using an adaptor to transfer the data seems best. |

| 593853 | 2007-09-21 23:48:00 | The laptop is probably worth under $500, and it would cost upwards of $750 to have the motherboard replaced. On my four-year-old Toshiba it cost over $2000, but Toshiba paid for it because it was a known design flaw. Check the voltage of the power supply you plugged in compared to the correct one, and the polarity. This may help us work out exactly what happened. Did the smoke come from the power supply or the laptop? If the power got through the whole laptop and you tried to boot it, the hard drive could well have been fried along with everything else in their. I wouldn't expect this to have happened though. More likely it burnt the internal PSU out. |
