593723 2007-09-21 10:17:00 I have problems with very slow access of my gmail and yahoo. they are both using secure servers.

when xtra upgraded to bubble, and switched all accounts to secure, my xtra became slow also

I solved the problem with using the old email servers.

The problem did not disappear when using another adsl router, but it did go away when using a friend's wireless gasp internet.

I have also noticed other secure connections - HTTPS in browser also going very slow.

I have a strange feeling these would work fine on my own PC with my friend's internet.

It seems my actual internet connection (not my PC or router) doesn't like secured connections.

:badpc: Why!?!

593724 2007-09-21 10:30:00 you havn't got none standard MTU values? some secure connections do not like odd sized packets. tweak'e (69)
593725 2007-09-21 10:59:00 What's the standard values? Agent_24 (57)
593726 2007-09-21 11:21:00 Googled around, appears 1500 is the standard for ethernet, and 576 is the standard for internet.

so I changed my router's MTU settings from 1492 to 576 and guess what?

The speed kicks arse :D

593727 2007-09-21 11:40:00 sorry i'll have to go look it all up again as there is a few more settings .

576 is usually dailup . they usually use 1500 or slightly smaller for adsl . you can tweak it to help speed things up BUT if the packet is to big it gets broken up . some servers won't accept roken packets .

roughly put, i havn't dealt with this for years .

593728 2007-09-21 21:15:00 it's really weird because I never have changed the MTU, nothing had changed on my PC or Router, and aside from switching to go large, nothing had changed with my internet AFAIK.

576 worked ok on the d-link, but that has line disconnection issues anyway, so while that made it fast there was no point.

the dynalink that actually manages a good connection could only lower the MTU to 1000, but that still worked and gave me good speed with secured sites/email

I'm thinking, obviously, while 1000 works - it's probably much lower than needed, can I find out the highest MTU I can use before things start to crap out? or is 1000 good enough?

Use TCPoptimiser.exe and one of the tabs specifically tests for MTU size.
