This way if anything does go wrong at least you can fix it on the working drive and not risk any data.

Old saying - better to find out now theres a problem and fix it, than wait till you do have a problem and find out the backups dont work.

593992 2007-10-14 06:42:00 Hi Misty. I haven't partitoned my external HD. Just use MS Syn Toy to back up my HD every week. I don't have an imaging program at the moment.
I probably don't really have time to try stuff I won't use, especially with spring and the garden calling! I just tell my wife it's important maintenance I'm doing - so she can keep sending emails............

Thanks for the suggestion wainuitech however I don't have another drive - that is apart from the external one and on our laptop. I thought if I cleared one partition of the external and "restored" the image to that from the other external partition. Then I would not be risking the main drive on the PC.

When I use the term "restored" it is not truly correct in that it would never have been in that location in the first place ! Would that be technically possible ? :illogical

593994 2007-10-14 21:40:00 An alternative to buying software if you have a seagate drive is to use seagates free tools. The latest version is just Acronis ( 10 I think ) with some features disabled.

I only use imaging software to backup my main os partition occasionally and to clone a drive now and again and for this the seagate tools have worked perfectly so far..

593995 2008-03-01 04:12:00 I have Acronis 11 and it is very good. I also have Norton Ghost12 which bloated and arrogant, takes over.

On some computers the Acronis 11 rescue disc won't boot. The answer is given below, works 100% :-

- Insert a blank unformatted CD.

- Launch Acronis True Image 11 Home -> Tools -> Create Bootable Rescue Media -> Next -> Next -> Select Bootable media startup parameters. At Command line parameters type the following: "acpi=off noapic" (without quotas) -> Next -> Select your burning CD/DVD-ROM -> Next -> Proceed.

Check the functionality of Acronis Booting Rescue Media.

Another advantage is that Acronis produces a full program boot disc which can backup & Restore images. Norton boot disc only Restores.

And in some situations it STILL doesn't work.
It has problems with some MB chipsets, and doesn't see the sata drives.

Paragon on the other hand doesn't use drivers (!) at all and works perfectly on all PCs.

593997 2008-03-02 11:39:00 I see Norton Ghost 12 is now out. Anyone used it? Any thoughts?

I have it. Cost nothing due to beta testing.

Works okay on my machine under Vista32 Ultimate with 4GB mem and Q6700 quad CPU. Back up to a 1TB USB drive. FAT32 is an issue with file sizes and you must keep them under 4GB but no other issues. The interface is a little slow to open but you only need that to set up the initial backups and any ones you wish to add. The rest is automatic and you dont notice it.

Like all others it starts a service which likes to be by itself so I would suggest running only 1 backup program at a time. Little like running 2 virus scanners otherwise and they compete with each other for control.
