594056 2007-09-22 21:11:00 Either way, you can leave them zipped on a floppy / whatever.

Or unzip before before u copy them.

Just as long as u extract whats in the zipped file, before you install whats in it, or it wont work.

If the program youre using has an option to extract to a folder, select that.

Or else you'll have all the files, that are in the zip file spread all over the USB drive, instead of the folder/s they were in.

Is there anything else on that laptop besides that model #. Since nothing comes up in Google with what u posted.

594057 2007-09-22 21:16:00 Thanks so much for the advice guys. I've got to go to work now :( so it looks as though this may be a project for the last dark nights before daylight saving. I'll follow along with the suggestions and let you know the outcome. Blue Druid (4480)

594059 2007-09-23 02:30:00 I've used quite a few older laptops with Win98 on them and despite having a minimal amount of RAM installed they perform quite well speed-wise . As you have rightly deduced your main concern is finding the correct drivers for the hardware .

I have tried Googling that model without success so I would recommend running a few system information programs to try and grab the hardware details before formatting . I say several because from experience they don't always give sufficient information . Try these ones:

Everest - . com/download4181 . html" target="_blank">majorgeeks . com

AIDA32 - . com/AIDA32_-_Personal_System_Information_d181 . html" target="_blank">majorgeeks . com

Belarc - . com/Belarc_Advisor_d1385 . html" target="_blank">majorgeeks . com

SIW (System Info) - . com/SIW_System_Info_d4387 . html" target="_blank">majorgeeks . com

Save the results to a USB drive or pen or print out, then hunt down the drivers individually .

You could also use Driver Genius Pro ( . com/Driver_Genius_Professional_2007_d4056 . html" target="_blank">majorgeeks . com) to backup and save your current drivers though whether they will work with Win98 is another matter . No harm in trying however . Do a search on the forum for Metla's instructions on how to use this program .

With regards to transferring files, I find it less hassle to transfer them already unzipped from a USB flashpen but do remember that Win98 requires drivers for USB devices, including flashpens . Otherwise, you will need to install a program to unzip them before you can do anything else .

If you need a refresher on how to reinstall Win98 there is a tutorial in the forum's FAQ section ( . net . nz/index . php?title=List" target="_blank">faqf1 . net . nz) under Basic Computer Maintenance .

594060 2007-09-23 04:22:00 A memory "stick" won't fit. The older Satellites (like the 2550 CDT) use proprietary memory cards. :( The base 64MB is soildred to the motherboard, and an extra card (64MB only?) plugs over those chips. Graham L (2)
594061 2007-09-23 08:23:00 TinyXP might be an option? apsattv (7406)
594062 2007-09-23 08:51:00 Tiny XP??? I've not heard of it but I'm intrigued. Can you tell me more about it?

After work tonight I fired the little thing up but nothing would function. This is since the last AVG update which now reports "something is seriously wrong with your installation."

The start button will not function and I cannot access the control panel. All in all, I think it is definitely overdue for something to make it tick properly.

Since I can't access anything, I was not able to run any system information programs but I suspect that Graham L is right in saying that adding a ram stick is not going to be the answer. I think to be useful with W2K it would need to be a minimum of 256 Mb anyway, no? I know my desktop didn't like W2K with only 128 Mb.

I still think the reformat is the best option but I'm still a little leery about getting W98SE running on it again. Partly because I am not sure yet what drivers I will have to find or whether they are available.

This will have to be a serialized project and it may take me a couple of weeks to get all my ducks in a row. I'd rather do it once and do it right than completely stuff up to the point that I can't do anything at all.

Tiny XP, if it is anything like it sounds might be the salvation, do you think?

594063 2007-09-23 09:38:00 TinyXP is like a smaller install of XP.

I'm pretty sure, I've had 2k running on 64mb before. It wasnt that slow.

594064 2007-09-23 09:59:00 Truthfully, I seem to remember that it used to be a lot faster on 2K but then I doubted my own memory. Maybe it would be a better option to just reinstall 2k as a fresh install and forget about 98? Unquestionably it would be a lot easier, provided I save the drivers first. I still have all the .exe files for my 2k apps and I far prefer using 2K over 98.

Am I right in thinking that all the drivers are located in one single file in 2K? Can I just flick them onto a floppy or something and flick them back after the reinstall or is it more complex than that?

Alternatively, is Tiny XP likely to be a better option? If so, how does one acquire it? Is it a download or something that would need to be sourced from a reseller?
