593456 2007-09-21 19:42:00 Some rural locations have long driveways running between two electric fences located a fair distance from a Telecom roadside cabinet.

Hmmm, got me wondering. We have a telephone roadside box and a broadband box 2 meters outside one of our boundry fences (non electrified). The house is around 600 meters away slightly uphill but in direct line of site of the roadside cabinets. Though I can see that electric power would be a problem, but is there any gadget, like a small wifi amp that I could put on our property near the cabinets and using a high gain antenna, beam a wireless signal to the house? Obviously would need more than just an amp and antenna. And I would need to get telecom to install a 2 meter phone line to the setup and of course another telecom line bill would result!!

Maybe be Telecom would let use the power going to the roadside cabinet (won't hold my breath) ! But then again, if it was powered by a 12 volt deep cell battery, I would have no problem swapping the battery over from time to time.

The distance by road following the tele line is 6.3 km as measured by car ( the line follows the road).

Probably pie in the sky, but any thoughts? Nah, don't think it would work but still interested in thoughts.

I wouldn't say its the main problem. It is for those further away than 5km. And its 5, not 3 or 4.
I'm very close and my broadband is rubbish. There are a lot of factors that affect your broadband not just distance.
Telecom would like this kept quiet though.

Satellite can be both directions. Also another option that a lot of people in my area that can't get wired BB is www.scorch.co.nz
