593246 2007-09-20 06:43:00 Yes yes, I know, time to chew on humble pie
Anyway, I am about to score an old imac (something said about 8.4, I assume thats the OS). Apparently, the language settings are in german, and noone knows how to set it back to english. So theyre giving it away.
How do I set the language back to english (remembering, I don't understand a word of german, so you may need to be very graphical in your reply)

593247 2007-09-20 06:48:00 yes System 8.4 would be currently termed as Classic, it is the Mac equivalent of about Win98. I take it it is a G3 iMac (the Gum Drop design). Safari might be your best bet. I can't remember back that far. winmacguy (3367)

It's not a "problem" per say, it's just a case of navigating thru (by memory) to the language settings section via the Apple menu in the top left of the screen ( I never used system 8.6, I started on System 9.2.4 back in 2000) and changing it from Deutsch to English.

593250 2007-09-20 07:50:00 From memory there is no way to change the language in OS 8 or 9. You must either buy and install an English version of OS 8, or a version of OS X that runs on your machine (OS X is multilingual). Safari (3993)
593251 2007-09-20 08:01:00 yeah if it is a local German version then you'll need to get the English one on a CD instead. More info here (homepage.mac.com).

I'm assuming all the dialog boxes system menu are German and not just the input language to use.

593252 2007-09-20 09:41:00 OK, got it home, had a look.
It is indeed a german version of mac os 9. Came with the discs (german)
I am hoping I can somehow get it to english, without re-installing.
Any ideas?

593253 2007-09-20 09:46:00 Judging by Safari's previous comment, you will either need to source an English version of OS9 or get an OS X disk and install that. What does the actual Mac look like? is it a beige box or a coloured iMac? winmacguy (3367)
