595152 2007-09-26 02:13:00 My son's comp. win2000.He installed a webcam no problem and the picture shows on the computer. When he tried to sign into MSN it said "sorry can not sign you in at this time, try again later 80072efd" My sign up worked fine.He then tried multiple other sites but got the same message "The connection was refused while trying to connect". ..We are both on the same 4 way router. I told him to uninstall the cam and reboot. Then the comp. stalled and said there was a corrupted file. He put in the win2000disc and did a repair which brought the comp. back to life but still no internet access. The cam box just says WEB CAMERA. Please can anyone help? gradebdan (2186)
595153 2007-09-26 03:27:00 See if some of the things here fix it (msn-errors.blogspot.com)

Did someone do a scan for malware etc recently??

595154 2007-09-26 04:30:00 Speedy. Thanks for your reply. my son did the necessary. From the forum on that "error" site it appears that the people can not access Messenger but can access the internet. My son can not get on the internet through ANY site. gradebdan (2186)
595155 2007-09-26 04:40:00 Sounds like something has screwed it up.

Try resetting IE 6 / 7 if he uses this, and see whats in the hosts file (do a search for it). See if there's anything odd in it.

Can he ping anything??

And can he update programs if any can be updated from within whatever program?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
595156 2007-09-26 05:51:00 He uses Mozilla.
How do you ping.
I tried on his m/c updating from within a program:-
Spybot= waving torch, that never stopped.
Java= "check proxy settings"
Ad Aware="error retrieving updates"
Mozilla="the connection was refused when attempting to conn. to the internet.
I thought I would empty his recycle bin (126mb).
A message came up "cannot delete file can not read from the source disk or file". This last bit is maybe totally unrelated.

595157 2007-09-26 05:59:00 Does it say a cable is unpluged or something in his taskbar??

Do a scan with Trojan remover (www.simplysup.com)

Install it click on scan, and select all options under utilities.

If u cant copy it across the NW, put it on a floppy or USB flash drive if u have 1.

Go to start/run type cmd. Type something like ping www.ihug.co.nz

Does it say 0% loss or does it time out?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
595158 2007-09-26 06:07:00 Well, you might just have to fully re-install Mozilla to see if it works after that or not.

To Ping: Start- Run- Type in 'cmd' (no quotation)- once the prompt comes up, type in 'ping www.google.com or www.pressf1.co.nz'

595159 2007-09-26 06:18:00 If the Ping to a web site is not working, something may have gone wrong with the TCP/IP settings.

Try to see if the router is connecting to the PC OK. To do that . open the command prompt like before ( CMD) and type in ipconfig That should give you 3 addresses. 1 the PC's address, subnet - mask and the Router.

If you get the first 3 numbers of 169.???.???.??? then theres no connection.

Down load Dial a Fix (wiki.djlizard.net) is a collection of Microsoft Fixes, but it really hammers all the network and other settings - as in removes them and rebuilds back to default. Use at your own risk - read the guff on the site about it.

I've used it lots of times on XP and never caused any damage.
BUT has worked 100% of the time - fixed any network / internet problems.

595160 2007-09-26 06:27:00 He has checked all the cables.
I will hve to d/l Trojan remover on my m/c and copy it to a cd or floppy.
I did the ping test:-destination host unreachable, 100% loss.
Re Mozilla. All my pc world discs are DVD. He has cd ,
Will have to copy from my m/c

595161 2007-09-26 06:46:00 I typed in the ipconfig.
"Ethernet adapter local area conn.3
connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Address :10.1.1.3
Subnet mask :255.0.0.0
Default Gateway"
