594674 2007-09-25 05:03:00 I have to replace a burnt out motherboard (Biostar K8). Will I need to reload Windows XP or anticipate any OS or bios issues? Any advice? bpt2 (6653)
594675 2007-09-25 05:22:00 In most cases you will not need to re-install Windows.
you will need to re-install your motherboard drivers, however.

Not entirely true, whilst XP doesn't mind small changes to your hardware, replacing a motherboard is a completely different kettle of fish... Now don't get me wrong you could probably get away with a very nasty install by just swapping all the gear over but if you want a headache free replacement process you're probably better of doing a clean install from the start.

594677 2007-09-25 06:31:00 Going into Device Manager and deleting everything in System Devices, and anything else that's onboard works 90% of the time.

If it doesn't, a repair install of Windows will sort the mess out.

Or at least a Non Distruct Reinstall.

You'll soon tell, if it blue screens on you then try below - Pays to have any data backed up before soing this - Its meant to leave data alone but doesn't always work - works around 99% of the time though.

Non Distruct Reinstall -----

You will Need your 25 digit product key for this.

Place XP CD in drive:

Reboot or shutdown and start PC.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
7. When complete load any drivers required for New Motherboard.

This only works if the PC is working to start with - If the boards burnt out as stated in this case - it wont boot to allow removel of drivers.

So you have a dead Motherboard Biostar K8.

Are you replacing this Biostar K8 with an identical motherboard? And this means exactly the same incuding BIOS revision.

If so you only have to fit the motherboard and plug in all cards.

How did the motherboard get burnt out?

Did any other pci or vga or modems get tired as well?

So my advice is that it depends.

Yep. Funny thing is if I was actually doing the job I'd catch myself when I tried to go and boot it up to delete the drivers. Sometimes giving advice on the internet is harder than actually fixing computers :p
