594660 2007-09-25 04:29:00 I have a Dell computer just out of warranty xp
Its got a lcd screen with 2 usb ports in the left side. They have both stopped working
My problem started when when one of my printers wouldnt work. I have 2 printers one is newish HP its hooked into an usb and works sweet. Other is HP 520 (1994 model) its got a dse usb to serial adaptor and it died. I have run out of usb ports except the ones on the front of the box but I reckon the kids would take them out when they are fighting
I sorta confirmed the usb ports on the printer are dead because when I plug in memory stick nothing happens even green led is unlit.
Is my problem software related or is some thing koozed in the wiring.
I have pulled the plugs from the monitor and computer and refitted them to no avail. The screen works ok as a screen. If none here can help me I suppose I will have to get a DSE usb hub.
Thanks for any help

594661 2007-09-25 05:14:00 Maybe the printers etc attached to the monitor USB ports pulled too much power and damaged them. Just guessing beeswax34 (63)
594662 2007-09-25 22:45:00 Printers shouldn't take any power from the USB, as they have their own power supplies Agent_24 (57)
594663 2007-09-25 22:53:00 Get USB 2 PCI cards if u have spare slots.

I wouldnt rely on those USB to serial adapters.

I've got 2 neither work. When you plug anything thats USB into them.

NOT all USB 2 devices like USB hubs either.

594666 2007-09-26 07:21:00 I dont get the usb bit. The printer has a serial plug it was made before usb were invented
Wouldnt I just need a serial card for my computer?
Dell dont ship with serial ports only usb and something called firewire.
I have trade account so prices ok even so I suppose it would be made in communist china
The printer works tried on a lappy.
But wait theres more plugged my serial hub into another usb port on the computer and it dosent work.
Reinstalled drivers still dont work.
It might be cause and effect the hub might of crapped out and burnt out the wiring to the monitor usb ports.
Would it be dumb to test it in another computer?
Could it be shorted out I await advice.
thanks

594667 2007-09-26 07:39:00 Look in device manager and look under the USB entries.

See if anything has a X or ! beside it.

I take it SP1 or 2 is on this?

You sure the printer has serial not a parallel port??

It sounds like that serial hub whatever it is, is knackered.

Either get a parallel PCI card (if the printer is parallel), or get a PCI USB 2 card and a printer that uses USB 2.

Or if the printer has USB 2 ports, connect it directly to a USB 2 port.

And if none of the USB ports, on the case dont work when you plug anything directly into a port. See if USB is enabled in the BIOS.

594668 2007-09-26 07:51:00 Aah sorry, I think I know:

You want a PCI card that has a Serial (COM) DE-9 port on it? correct?

www.trademe.co.nz

www.trademe.co.nz

Don't know if you can buy them new, but either of those would do what you want

594669 2007-09-26 08:07:00 In device manager it showed the hub as working.Do you think I should test the hub on another computer.
Thanks for the links I will get card if I can confirm the hub is shot.
The printer plug looks like its got more than 9 pins have I got serial parallel porrts mixed up?
thanks
