594319 2007-09-25 10:44:00 Nothing to do with school holidays this problem on Ihug has been ongoing for about 3 months now.

I have heard of lots of similar compliants ever since vodafone took them over. Maybe there is some major cost cutting going on. They aren't the only ISP that has gone bad. It seems that after an ISP is named ISP of the year, it then goes bad.

594321 2007-09-26 09:51:00 That's interesting. I had lots of timeouts, too, but since moving from IHUG to xnet four weeks ago these seem to have gone. I hadn't registered this till reading this thread! linw (53)
594322 2007-09-27 07:30:00 My connection runs better now that my line issue has been fixed, but I do have the following issues :

Slow response to any links I click/page loading - once it gets going its usually ok.
Usually have refresh the pages 2x to get them loaded properly.
FTP upload to servers is odd - will start uploading fine, then pauses for upto 5mins then starts again, fires through a few files then pauses again. This happens on IHUGs homepages server and others I use. Have tried multiple clients and even reinstalled OS to fix it but still no go properly.
Newsgroup server... well..... wont even go there.

Thankfully I dont have a contract with them (or email) so its no big issue for me to swap to another ISP if need be but would prefer to stay with IHUG as they also supply my phone service and its handy having it on one bill. (Yes I know others do it too, but they dont offer a good Vodafone deal with it ;) )

It did take a few attempts to get it loaded yesterday, but today it was fine.

594326 2007-10-02 19:48:00 I'm having major problems as well. Every page will be a timeout or will take 5 mins to "begin" to load. Once the site begins loading it fires through at full speed.

It really seems like http requests are either just lost or dropped.

Ihug are working hard to resolve it and I am pretty happy with their response so far

Does anyone know of any open DNS servers that I could try ? All of the ones that I find seem to be restricted to their users only.

For those of you who are have highly technical and analytical minds:
1) Sites timeout or begin to load only after 5 or 6 minutes
2) Simultaneous ping test to the sites show very low latencies and no dropped packets
3) Pinging a site's domain name ( ping www.ihug.co.nz ) will resolve the name into an IP address indicating that DNS is working fine ?
4) Some sites seem to load instantaneously www.google.com and google search results ( ie these are unique and can not be cached )
5) Happens at any time of day ( ie not traffic related )

594327 2007-10-02 21:04:00 head over to telstras website. i think its still paradise.net.nz and use thier DNS servers.

do a tracert to an international site and tell me what gateway they are using. im pretty sure that Ihug use Asianetcom.net and they are crap compared to telecoms gateway. well i assume they use different ones. althogh i have not done a trace on a telecom connection before.

seems woosh use them as well here is my output

594328 2007-10-02 22:31:00 Looks like you are right about the DNS servers ( first two internal hops omitted for security ) but I am not sure if that is actually the issue. All of the people with problems seem to be located in whangaparaoa or orewa and it is a freaky kind of issue. Not slow but actually semi-broken.

Hostname.Domain pings resolve to IP's without any issues whatsoever, which makes me think maybe it's not DNS ( the pings are fast as well )

I just checked and one of the guys here at work is ihug + whangaparaoa and he is having the exact same issue.

check www.gpforums.co.nz for more people with the same problem ( ihug + orewa/whangaparaoa )
