595145 2007-09-26 08:14:00 Just a thought - are the capacitors for the CPU power supply (biggish ones near or around the CPU socket) showing signs of failure (swelling and/or crusty deposits) ? I've got a similar-era PC (2004-ish?) that died at work after turning the PSU off for the first time in a couple of months & now won't re-start (even with new PSU) - a few of the caps are looking very sad & I suspect are preventing the CPU's low-voltage supply from getting started. There was a lot of trouble internationally with dud electrolytic capacitors a few years ago. MushHead (10626)
595146 2007-09-26 08:36:00 Just an extra thing... re: CPU fans. Just recently I had a fan that was spinning at about a third of the speed it should have been, thus causing the CPU to overheat. When I got the computer, the dust was heavily built up in the cooler. I cleaned it all out, but a few days later the CPU started overheating again. The increased resistance from the dust build up [originally] must have severely worn the bearings
If the CPU fan is spinning quite fast, then this won't be a problem.

595147 2007-09-26 09:29:00 Oh wow, I dont know about CPU fan then, I have no idea how fast its meant to be spinning? When I put the new one together tomorrow Ill compare the speeds.

But I can definately see how you think its the power supply george. Was my first thought also..

And Ill check the mobo capisitors shortly as well, hopefully not!

595148 2007-09-26 10:11:00 You'll know if the CPU fan is going too slow. The one I had was doing something like 5 revolutions per second Myth (110)
595149 2007-09-26 10:14:00 Oh ok, mine was doing at least a few hundred rpm.. Hmmm Damz (10942)
595150 2007-09-26 19:32:00 Oh ok, mine was doing at least a few hundred rpm.. HmmmWell then, your CPU cooler seems okay
As others have said, PSU will be the next thing to look at

595151 2007-09-26 19:50:00 No worries. Thanks for that bud. I might plug in the new PSU when it arrives today, and see how we go. Ill report back with my findings! Haha Damz (10942)
