595135 2007-09-26 03:03:00 Hey guys,

Just dusted off my old PC a few days ago, hasnt been used in probably, 2 years?

Its half decent, Athlon 1800+, 512MB, 40GBHDD, 32MB Nvidia card . . .

Anyways, I was online playing UT G . O . T . Y Edition for maybe, half an hour? And the whole system just died . I pushed the power button to try and turn it back on, but nothing . .

About an hour later, I hit the power, and it started up, and ran fine!? But again, during UT it crashed and wouldnt turn back on . .

I havent really done it enough times to know for sure that its the heavy-ish usage thats doing it, its just a guess . Maybe somethings overheating?
Any ideas?

Thanks

If you havent done inside the case.

595137 2007-09-26 03:14:00 It is most likely overheating because this happen to me with my old PC and i cleaned almost every part inside and it made no difference.. w000t (11562)
595138 2007-09-26 03:15:00 Nah there isnt any dust, I opened it up to have a look at the internals, seeing as im building my first PC tomorrow (yei!).. Thanks anyway Damz (10942)
595139 2007-09-26 03:40:00 Are all the fans spinning? george12 (7)
595140 2007-09-26 03:44:00 Yep, when I had it open they were. I just went to check again, and now it doesnt want to turn on at all..?? Maybe a dodgy PSU? Damz (10942)
595141 2007-09-26 03:49:00 Check all physical connections first - it's the first rule of troubleshooting.

Pull out and re-insert all of your cards.

If you can, replace cables with known good cables.

Remove and re-insert your RAM.
Check the secureness of your heatsink/fan - they're quite weighty and can do bad things when cases are moved around.

595143 2007-09-26 03:57:00 Oh, and you could just have a bad connection in the on/off switch on the case. If you are confident enough, pull out the case connection to the on/off pins on the motherboard and short the pins with a key. Deane F (8204)
595144 2007-09-26 04:06:00 It actually sounds like the PSU could be overheating. It's not at all uncommon for power supply fans to die in old computers. Did you check that the fan in the power supply is spinning? george12 (7)
