595006 2007-09-25 23:24:00 This is probably a simple question for most but can anyone tell me if when you install a trial video game from the monthly NZ PC World CD/DVD-ROM whether this adds new registry keys. If so would uninstall remove these or would it be safer to restore system to an earlier time point. I'm a bit paranoid about clogging up the registry on my brand new computer (Vista OS). I'm also a bit wary of registry cleaning programmes. Thanks for your time. stevetp (12858)
595007 2007-09-25 23:34:00 Most programs or games most probably do put something in the registry.

Otherwise, it wouldnt know where to look for it, and it wouldnt run/work properly.

Thats why there's a registry in the first place. If programs didnt add entries to it, it wouldnt be there.

Depends how good the uninstall function is, it may leave folders belonging to the program / game as well as leave parts of it in the registry.

If I can be bothered, sometimes when I uninstall something, I delete its folders if theyre still there and delete the registry entries myself, or use ccleaner to do it for me.

The only thing I know of that doesnt add anything to a registry, is if you've got something like a U3 USB flash drive.

BUT, these are only for programs / games specifically made for these.

595008 2007-09-25 23:58:00 Thanks Speedy Gonzales. What you said makes sense - would doing a system restore to an earlier time point (before game was installed) also get rid of the registry entries? Thanks again stevetp (12858)
595009 2007-09-26 00:33:00 Not too sure it may do, I dont use SR myself.

I wouldnt rely on System restore, every time you want to get rid of something tho.

Coz depending on what else you did, BEFORE installing a program / game.

(If you installed updates for example).

You'll also have to reinstall whatever it is. After, you use SR.

595010 2007-09-26 10:00:00 Thanks again. I understand about limitations of SR as use it quite alot - aways make sure I save a restore point immediately before installing some new game, etc to limit issues with other downloads and updates after the SR point. Cheers. stevetp (12858)
595011 2007-09-26 10:31:00 What I do is use Altiris and make a new software layer and install any game demos off the PC world DVD into it.

works well.
