| 595622 | 2007-09-27 09:19:00 | Ok... I have Windows Media Player 11 on my computer and I want to go back to WMP 10. Only it's not as easy as it seems because there is no previous version of WMP on my PC, so I can't remove it from the 'Add or Remove Programs' menu, even when I make it show the updates. This tutorial doesn't help at all (www.microsoft.com er ) Also, I tried downloading WMP 10 and installing it and it gave me this error (I have Windows XP Pro) i21.tinypic.com How can I get rid of WMP 11? |

| 595626 | 2007-09-27 11:04:00 | You cant remove it, its part of XP. The only way you'll remove it and other annoying programs, is to make a bootable CD with something like Nlite. And reinstall / format Windows. Or install something else, and dont look at or run WMP. So, are there any entries in add/remove programs called anything like Windows Media player? |

| 595629 | 2007-09-27 13:31:00 | Why don;t you take a screenshot of your Add/Remove Programs window and we'll tell you if there is anything to be done from there. | beeswax34 (63) | ||

| 595631 | 2007-09-27 17:08:00 | There were versions of XP that had WMP11 in it as the ONLY version, and a roll-back isn't possible the way you want to do it . Other times people click on the notice that "WMP needs a security update: click here" phish . It's all downhill from there . Here's what I had to do on one of my systems . . . . (although I usually just burn the whole system down on those who got fooled into the update and start them from zero and let them kick themselves for doing the update when I leave . ) #1) Add a different player . . . your choice here to get whatever you want but NOT WMP . Just for kicks and giggles, try RealPlayer® . . and although I hate it intensely, you need to not allow the files you currently have to become lost with no associations for now . Later, totally remove RP, as it's basically spyware and a phish-scam area worse than WMP11 . Consider that MAYBE WMP11 has secreted your media files to file names or extensions that are not recognizable now to any other player . . even WMP10 . I have seen them disappear when v11 gets in the door, never to be found again . #2) Then, when the new program asks what files you want to associate with it, take them all . . even the ones that you are going to later give back to WMP10 . Use your search and making sure you have "Show Hidden Files/Folders" enabled, you have to find every vestige of Window's player in every form you can . . . it isn't enough to just destroy some of it, but MOST of it must be deleted and DON'T let any of them stay in the recycle bin either . You'll get all sorts of questions and warning that you are destroying critical files and that you aren't gonna have children again and your dog's gonna get run over, but carry on for as long as you can . I suggest looking into the PROGRAMS area in your root disc too for any pieces of WMP11 . Try to eliminate the thing from as near the <rootfile> as you can . . that affords a closer to the root . . . cleaner kill . NOW . . . (and hopefully you didn't get the secret shove-WMP11-in-your-face update or Hotfix from M$ to limit you to WMP11), get the download of WMP10 from a third party or even M$ . . it won't matter . . they are all the same . Once in the system as a saved file . . . DON'T EXECUTE IT YET! Reboot into SAFE MODE and then install WMP10 . It worked for me . . and I know it's a long work-around, especially the search part . . . . . . but M$ sets up denials for installing WMP10 in alliance with the MPAA/RIAA for sinister reasons that will likely show up soon . I am on a personal vendetta against WMP11 . |
