595642 2007-09-29 00:30:00 I tried it last time...NOPE! You can download it but not install it.

It's that nasty Hotfix that creates the denial and keeps you from changing back to an earlier player.

Ok, then that Hotfix needs to be determined, and removed from Add/Remove Programs, if possible. Else all hotfixes installed over the last year could be uninstalled, and then see if WMP 9 or 10 can be installed.

I found this site with long discussions about this problem:

595643 2007-09-29 00:42:00 ok so after deleting the registry stuff and going to safe mode to try to install 10, it still gives me the same error...

maybe wmploc.dll has something to do with it...

msmvps.com

I copied the file from 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache' into 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\', but that didn't work... the version only version I have of wmploc.dll is 11.0.5721.5145!

595644 2007-09-29 00:42:00 I am very FOR WMP11 . Can you tell me whats so wrong with it?

You have been told many times what the problem with WMP11, so I don't think there is any reason to list them . When people list them your response is it doesn't do it for me .

As for the original poster, ditch WMP and use a decent music player .

I am not sure that Hotfixes CAN be removed or uninstalled.

But, I am on the search for it...I have another old Dell that I'll install WMP10 after an fdisc and XP reinstall and then try to drop back to WMP9 step by stinking step until I find the Hotfix that causes the denial...

I will be back in person in about 45 days after a lot of beer and/or medication.:stare:

PS: I expect to be paid...WELL!

Wait what? I din't get that first para at all . Some people have issues with DRM sure, but some people just don't know how to use it properly which CAN be addressed .

595647 2007-09-29 06:41:00 And if the files arent covered in DRM, there's nothing to worry about anyway.

Just dont load DRM files in WMP 11.

595648 2007-09-29 08:49:00 WMP11 is complete garbage. The main reason why WMP is even worth anything is its library management capabilities... with v11, they just bloated the library with a lot of useless, unnecessary stuff like huge album covers plastered all over the place! A lot of options from the 'Now Playing' list are gone as well, such as the Advanced Tag Editor...

To each his own, if you like it for whatever reason, keep using it... no need to question people that are simply asking for help. :)

Thanks to those who did try to help ;)

595649 2007-09-29 09:09:00 I was finally able to install WMP10!!

the thing is, there are many more files related to WMP than you think... you have to remove every single .dll file that pertains to WMP11 from both your 'System32' folder, and whatever folder your system restores these files from when they are modified or deleted (in my case it's 'System32\dllcache')

This should help you figure out what files you need to delete

1. Download an executable of WMP11 through M$, just don't install it.
2. Use WinRAR or equivalent to extract all the files from the .exe to a folder...
3. Go into Safe Mode
4. Use the files you extracted as reference to know what to delete from both your 'System32' and 'dllcache' folders. Pretty much, if you see any file on those folders with the same name as any file you extracted, you have to delete it!

After you get rid of every file and are sure that they aren't being restored, run CCleaner or your favorite registry cleaner to remove all the entries that have to do with WMP... Finally, install WMP10!

*If any of you understand what I'm saying and feel like you can word it differently and/or go more in-depth, then feel free...

595650 2007-09-29 09:32:00 Very sweet and innovative fix restoril. In fact beautiful in it's simplicity. zqwerty (97)
595651 2007-09-29 09:33:00 Well done. That dll cache can be a 'nuisance' when trying to delete system files if they aren't deleted from there first. Terry Porritt (14)
