2007-09-28 06:10:00 | Yello, windows Media Player is in the " Add or remove windows components" section not ' Add or remove programs". don't if you looked in that section. cheers | Whenu (9358) | |
2007-09-28 06:28:00 | ok, it still won't let me install WMP10... 1. I associated every media file to VLC... 2. I went into Safe Mode and deleted every WMP11 file from 'System32' and 'Program Files'. 3. In Safe Mode, when I try to install WMP10, the same message pops up saying it's not compatible... (i21.tinypic.com) so how do I get around that to install wmp10? thanks

2007-09-28 21:46:00 | ok, it still won't let me install WMP10 . . . 1 . I associated every media file to VLC . . . 2 . I went into Safe Mode and deleted every WMP11 file from 'System32' and 'Program Files' . 3 . In Safe Mode, when I try to install WMP10, the same message pops up saying it's not compatible . . . ( 1 . tinypic . com/v8hjqc . jpg" target="_blank">i2 1 . tinypic . com) so how do I get around that to install wmp10? thanks The way you are locked out is because of a Hotfix that M$ slid into your updates a while back . . that alone is reason enough to suspect the sinister reasons why NOT to have v1 1 . OK . . at this point, and since you cannot un-install the Hotfixes with the secret code, you are prolly gonna have to fdisc the whole thing and start all over . Here's the OTHER scenario I had to do on my own machines . You have to really pay attention to the order and sequence of the re-installation of your XP . Clean house first, saving what files you need . . . you may have to kiss any videos and music goodbye because v11 grabbed and likely renamed them to it's own foul purposes . . . . Immediately install your anti-spyware . . . and there's so much information and flame wars started over what's good and bad, you can pretty much take your pick as long as McAfee, Norton or Symentec isn't in the picture . As quick as you think you are safe, get SP-2 into the system . This is very important to get you qualified to get the rest of the updates AFTER you get WMP10 . . . not before . If you let M$ send all the updates, you're gonna get that nasty dis-qualifier Hotfix and you're back to square one . Once you get v10 installed THEN get the rest of the Hotfixes and Updates . Do not accept the offer from M$ to "Update" WMP10 . . . it's a trick to take you back to v11 again . . . and you KNOW how bad that is! I am still investigating which one of the little Hotfixs that sets this nasty ball rolling . . . and when I find it I'll spread the word wide and loud . :angry

2007-09-28 21:58:00 | I went into Safe Mode and deleted every WMP11 file from 'System32' and 'Program Files'. This was NOT the brightest thing to do. It may remove the files/folders, but the entries for it are / will still be in the registry. NEVER delete folders, until you uninstall the program. Even if the entry isnt in add/remove programs. You'll break windows, or something thats required, and make XP unusable. And in the end you'll have no option, BUT to format it. BUT since you've deleted the folders for WMP 11, try ccleaner (which has just been updated again), and use the registry tab...Whatever it finds, delete it.

2007-09-28 23:33:00 | I have no prob with deleting stuff at this point because all my data is backed-up, so I can just reformat if I mess up completely... I just ran CC and deleted all the registry entries for wmp... I'll try running wmp10 setup in safe mode now.. | restoril (12672) | |
2007-09-28 23:46:00 | I still have Windows Media Player 9 with my XP Pro, that is when I do use WMP, otherwise I use Media Player Classic, or Winamp However WMP 9, whilst it is no longer available from M$, can be downloaded from here: www.oldversion.com It is possible that version 9 may install, even though version 10 wont.

I tried it last time...NOPE! You can download it but not install it. It's that nasty Hotfix that creates the denial and keeps you from changing back to an earlier player. |
