595379 2007-09-27 11:37:00 Yes another thread on the subject...:o

I've finally got my new system up and running using 32bit Vista but I'm still stuck with dial-up for the moment, I haven't been online with it as I don't have complete confidence in Windows Defender.

I've downloaded versions of Ad-Aware, SpyBot and AVG for Vista but I don't have a firewall yet.
The Vista version of Comodo appears to be still beta which puts me off a bit. I tried the XP version of ZoneAlarm and didn't like it so I'm not expecting the Vista version to be any better.
PC Tools has a firewall for Vista but I've never heard of it and I haven't found anything yet on the PressF1 about it.

Can anyone recommend a software firewall for Vista?

Thanks
Av4tarnz

I have been on vista for 6 months and use the built in firewall and never had any problem / issue . I am on bb so I think its pretty safe no matter what all the 3rd party software suppliers say.

You'll need bb to keep up with vista patches me thinks...they r reliable...
good luck

595380 2007-09-27 13:33:00 I may be wrong but did you just say that being on BB makes you safe(r) from any internet nasties because you would be so wrong, there is no magnitude to measure it... beeswax34 (63)
595381 2007-09-27 21:20:00 The Vista firewall is probably better than ZA Free anyhow. ZA Free is not that good. The Pro version however, is a different story. autechre (266)
595382 2007-09-27 21:25:00 What if I was to only use the internet on my new computer ONLY for Windows and Steam updates, until there are more security programmes available for Vista, would the built in firewall be alright? av4tarnz (5829)

Well I surf the Internet using only the inbuilt one and no problems whatsoever in about 3 months so that would be restricting yourself unnecessarily but if you want to...

Maybe I should have said even though I am on bb I still have no problems / issues... bad english day!

595385 2007-09-28 11:17:00 dont really see why you need one tbh, yeah sure they give some protection. and let you know if something nasty is trying to talk to some random website. that you probably got from looking at something not so desirable.

I use Firestarter. and even its only a front end to the inbuilt linux one.

but you are talking about windows. basically dont do anything dodgy. and ya dont need a firewall. although Dial up is different. with ADSL your router kinda protects you.

Some decent ones i have used

Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) is rather good for windows.
Norton Internet Security 2007 or 2008. - Actually 100x better then any previous versions. as Norton seem to have fixed the issue with their products using a whole lot of resources.

and as said the default one that comes with Vista is fine. although I tend to turn all that crap off when i install a copy of XP or vista. dont do anything too dodgy so no need for a firewall.

595386 2007-09-28 11:23:00 No, Norton still sucks big time. It may consume less resources than before but that doesn't change the fact that it consumes 100x what most other similar programs do. beeswax34 (63)
595387 2007-09-28 11:29:00 true., still better than before. and well i dont use windows anymore. so everything runs better. even MS office running on an emulated windows API runs faster :D Cho (12330)

No he said he was safe because he was using the in-built firewall. I too use it and have since I got vista and have not been bugged yet.
I am planning on putting my free copy of Norton IS 2008 on it shortly as it is already on my lowely P3 and have no issues. And please spare me the "resources" cr*p because I know it makes no difference on my machine as it is a grunty little beast to start with. Even the P3 hardly notices it.
