Edit: DH beat me to it! The mannus.... :p
Great minds think alike! (or fools seldom differ...) I prefer the first!
Magic ISO is great for creating the images etc. but the emulation options are sadly lacking. Magic ISO for creating and working with images, Daemon for mounting.

595340 2007-09-27 03:49:00 Another alternative is Alcohol 52% Free Edition.
It is basically Alcohol 52% with a limit of 4 virtual drives, instead of the 21 drives of the non-free version.
Alcohol 52% in turn is just 120% without the CD burning abilities. It can still read CD's and create CD images then mount them.

As previously stated, Daemon Tools is very good also.

Alcohol is kinda crap if you need any emulation settings though.
Things like safedisc, securerom, laserlock, rpms etc which Daemon offers are needed to mounted some images.

595342 2007-09-27 04:27:00 Alcohol does offer those, or at least some of them.
I have only ever had to use the safedisc emulation, so I don't know about the others.

(give me a nice safedisc protected game CD any day..... None of this starforce/secuROM c**p)

Yea, I have games that I have to use SecureROM for so yea, I need Daemon Tools.
And I prefer using Daemon to Alcohol.

595344 2007-09-27 04:40:00 In reality they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
I find Daemon Tools to be better at mounting protected game CD's, however I like Alcohol's all-in-one interface. All one has to do to mount an image is double-click it in the main screen.

When it comes to safedisc, I find Daemon Tools' fastdump feature indispensable...

I have used both extensively in the past. I currently do not have either installed.

595345 2007-09-27 21:09:00 As for that site, Obelix, is it a legit site? In the course of some research, I did come across a lot of sites that 'claimed' to do what I wanted, but ended up trying to load/add/hide stuff on my computer. I'm a bit nervous of that sort of site at the mo!

The site is fine and has been running for many years now. Of course, I wouldn't dream of visiting it using IE in case you got some nasty from there, but I haven't heard of any problems as a result.

595346 2007-09-27 21:12:00 Use FF with noscript, or adblock for visiting those sites. I really like using noscript, as it tends to block any dodgy advertising as well as all the cr*p out there, and it gives you a list of all the sites trying to access your PC - with no sucess at all. :p wratterus (105)

Getting slightly off the subject ill admit, but you could just startup a virtual machine, go do all your dodgey browsing/downloading, and then who cares if you get spyware etc...?

I use Alcohol 52% Freeware with Thief 2, which has safedisc protection. Got no problems what so ever.

The only caveat I have is all that hdd space is used up holding cd images.
But one advantage is faster game loading.
