595321 2007-09-27 23:57:00 Good to c I have 2 "experts" working on my prob.
Now I appear to have.
A ribbon with a primary master and primary slave
then another ribbon that goes in to the same plug to the MOBO and it has
a secondary master on it along with my DVD writer.
Am I correct in assuming that the sec master should be a slave ?

Okay wait for the disagreement -:p

IDE1 - 1 Main drive Set to Master Other drive on same ribbon set to Slave.
IDE2 - HD set to Slave & DVD writer set to Master.

That way you have 1 Master HD and 2 slaves. (Hard Drives)

Note: Personally I wouldn't call Myself an Expert - I've seen a lot of so called Experts - then they have to call people who are in the business to repair what they stuffed up.

595322 2007-09-28 00:12:00 main reason for that setup mentiond above is because its easier to get the CD/DVD drive on the end of the cable rather than on the middle plug. unless ya 3rd hdd is mounted in some weird way. P Cho (12330)

Yep - I've seen the HD just "hanging" from the cable on some setups - The full weight on the ribbon -:groan: Not good

595325 2007-09-28 01:04:00 Another query after reading the above posts.
Is it critical where the master and slave are on the ribbon ?

Some say yes others say No - Usually I set them up (IDE1) The Drive on the End Connector as Master, and the Slave on the secondary Connector.

The important thing is to make sure they are seated correctly and are not Stressed as this would put unrequired and damaging pressure on the Connections / Pins.
I worked on a customers PC a few weeks back the ribbon was so tight you could almost play a tune on it - and he was having problems with the drive not reading some times - Gee Wonder why;)
I had to actually unscrew the drive to allow some of the pressure off so I could then remove the Ribbon.

595327 2007-09-28 02:18:00 Thanks guys,I have had some niggly boot problems and hope this new setup will overcome them and I can get back to normal. kjaada (253)
595328 2007-09-28 03:05:00 sorry didn't mean to start a fight, we'll just have to disagree on this point.

The main sticking point for me is in my opinion you should never have a sinle drive on and IDE cable configured as a slave, and I have never experienced any problems from having two masters on two channels.

I have no issue with your configuration above.
