596899 2007-10-01 21:19:00 Trying to tidy up all my cables. They're all different lengths. Is it safe to loop the excess then wrap it up in something (i.e. to make it easier to dust) or will heat build up or something else bad happen?

If that's safe, can I safely put several loops together of different types (power/usb/mouse) and cover them, or will they interfere with each other, signal-wise?

All the cables are in good condition.

596900 2007-10-01 21:26:00 Just be careful of induced signals and interference from what should be separate cables/wires .

There's always a little induction from two wires carrying different signals or voltages, so it's usually a good idea to cross each and every one of them at 90º angles to each other . . . not likely to happen under your feet . . . or even in the same room .

Winding cables into loops increases inductive capacity and resonances . Neat is not always a good answer .

I just let 'em fall into a precision pile and live with it . You MIGHT get away with it with very GOOD cables and lots of shielding and acute angles of intersection . . but I prefer to not go that way .

My floor under the systems looks like an explosion in a colored-spaghetti factory .

596901 2007-10-01 21:46:00 Thanks, Surfer Joe.

That being the case, I do have an alternative, which should be satisfactory from a neatness and safety point of view, but will be a bit more effort.

All my gear is on a very solid desk with a vertical "board" running the full length underneath (to support the table top). With a bit of planning I can fix little cable ties at various places and run the cables along the board so they are well spaced and separated. A "fun project" for a rainy day.

596902 2007-10-02 00:26:00 You could always run them up the wall, stapling them at intervals to create your own modern art bas relief .

Try to work the acute angles and crossover patterns and if you get it right, it'll be a big addition to your home .

Submit a pix or two and let's make a new thread called: "My Wall Wire Art" .

Extra points for including pets, small children, appliances and windows into the project design . :p

596903 2007-10-02 00:55:00 When I've finished with the wall arrangement I could smear it with honey, then when the ants come I could christen it "Live Wires" - that should be worth at least $20,000 from the Arts Council.

Or do I sense a PC World "Extreme Mod" competition in the making ... ?

You mean something like this (www.imagef1.net.nz)?

596905 2007-10-02 01:40:00 The back of my computer trolley looks like a cable factory exploded there. I have wires for 2 PC's and 2 Laptops and 1 PDA and routers, Woosh and the digital cameras and video cameras, TV Tuners and my XBOX.

I nearly die every time I look back there:lol:
