| 596425 | 2007-09-30 08:36:00 | I am just wondering what the difference between these two types of cards are. Is GTS much faster than a GT. Also is it better to get a 256MB GTs card, rather than a 512MB GT card? | rogerp (6864) | ||

And whether you'll notice a difference over what you've got now really comes down to.....what you've got now. As a general rule, unless you're making a jump of three tiers or more, you won't notice a large enough change to justify the expense. However, generally speaking, more on-card memory is better because the card memory is extremely fast and the bus between it and the GPU is huge. So the more it can hold - the more smoothly it can run. |

If you only plan to run the latest games (Ie Bioshock) in 1280x1024 or less at medium quality, then the 8600GTS is fine . If you are a gamer I STRONGLY advise saving your penny's and getting a 8800GTS 320MB as the 8600's are slower than the highest end last generation . The 8600's need the eye candy turned down rendering its DX10 capability near pointless . 512MB over 256 will not help much as the GPU doesn't have the grunt to run the highest quality textures anyway . An example of the was the 7900GT256MB vs the 7950GT512MB, with the 7950GT's extra Vram barely helping . A 320MB 8800GTS will destroy a 512Mb 8600GTS in every game no question . The extra Ram on the 640MB 8800GTS "does" make a difference over the 320MB 8800GTS as the 8800GPU has the Grunt to run high end games at higher detail . Simply put, there is a strong relationship between GPU power(speed) and Vram . |
