596336 2007-09-30 03:30:00 I'm going to make a RAID0 setup soon. Right now, all I have is a 120GB HDD.

My Vista Ultimate has accumulated most updates I see fit, ever since February this year I think.

Now, I need to reformat my 120GB HDD and install my Vista mon my RAID0 HDD setup. Is there any way I can make some sort of compilation of all the Windows and Defender updates I have installed, and put it on a CD?

I'd REALLY HATE to re-download every single updates.

Oh - second question - is there any way I can deactivate Vista before uninstalling it? I don't want to have to phone up some Indian guy in India and explain why I need a new number.

Thanks in advance!

Unless the files are in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (If Vista has this folder), or you downloaded them manually, and put them on a spare partition, no, I dont think u can back up or copy updates (if theyve already been installled) to cd or dvd.

But if you've got the original exe files, then sure, burn them to cd/dvd before u format.

If you havent installed something major, it should activate.

Why would you need a new key if its legit?

And no I dont think you can deactivate it before you format the hdd.

There's only a few exe files in that folder, but I couldn't identify which updates they are anyway . Well, this sucks . Looks like I'm gonna need to re-download everything again .

I don't mean key - activation numbers I mean .

596339 2007-09-30 05:15:00 Speedy is correct, it may be easier to download them from Microsoft, save them to a folder then burn that folder to CD You must use IE, other browsers don't appear to work. Microsoft Catalog Updates (catalog.update.microsoft.com) Type in Vista Security Updates it will show many:eek: Select the ones you want. AND windows Defender Updates and down load the Whole 1 of 2.6Mb:lol:

IF you are interested Here is the location that Vista stores the update when it downloads them, but I don't know if that will be of any use, as its the CAB files, and not the exe.

BE Careful fiddling around after this - Do the wrong thing and it could cause damage to the OS.

First you need to make some of these folders visable. Go into control Panel / Classic View. Folder options / View Select "show Hidden files and Folders" and while there Untick "Hide protected Operating System Files" OK / Apply.

Location: Windows Updates - C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloaded

Windows Defender : C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WindowsDefender\Updates

AND to Quote Speedy - If you havent installed something major, it should activate.

596340 2007-09-30 05:19:00 Installed anything major....I assume software? Because last time I just reformatted the HDD, and Vista refused to activate online, and forced me to speak to someone to get activation numbers.

Oh - and what can I do with the CAB files?

596341 2007-09-30 05:24:00 Installed anything major . . . . I assume software?

Usually hardware, like a CPU or mobo .

A cd/dvd shouldnt affect activation . Or software .

Well, I don't know why I had to activate through phone then. :S

And that MS Update catalogue - I need to download more than just security updates - and typing in Vista Updates fetches over 1000 results! :groan:

596343 2007-09-30 05:29:00 Oh - and what can I do with the CAB files?

Prob not a lot :stare: Its more trouble than what its worth, it would be easier to run Windows updates.
You can manually download the updates from Microsofts site I posted above, that has the update, but you still have to manually install each one - widows update would be much quicker. But if interested have a look Here (www.propeller.com) for cab files - NOT really recommended though.

As I put - "Vista Security Updates" brings back 47, some of which are X64, not required if your system is X86.
Windows Update would be quicker and more accurate for your system.
