| 596105 | 2007-09-29 04:15:00 | Hi, I've just purchased a new laptop running on Win Vista Business and I'm having a problem to get it to join an existing win XP workgroup consisting of another laptop and a desktop PC . I can view/edit/transfer files between the old laptop and the PC fine, but even after joining the new laptop to the workgroup, I can't seem to see any of the other shared folders through the network properties of the new laptop even when folder/file sharing is definitely on and firewalls (both windows and 3rd party) are turned off . I can ping all of the computers OK and on the new laptop, with the Vista's network mapping capability, I can see the old laptop but not the PC . oh and on a side note, I have changed the networking in Vista to "private" instead of public and all of the sharing options I've turned on . Any ideas on how to solve this? I read previous threads regarding this and I've installed the patches, hence I can see the old laptop but that's as far as it goes . Thanks in adv . |

I have McAfee Internet Security 2007 on both XP machines and a trial Norton AV on the new laptop and have disabled all 3 as well. My existing workgroup name is "Home" I've tried joining the XP computers to Vista's default workgroup name, "Workgroup" but still no joy. |

The workgroup names HAVE to be the same, or they wont see each other. Have you shared A folder (NOT the whole hdd), on the XP PC's?? |

Mine shows the following - Network Discovery - On File Sharing - On Public Folder Sharing - On (read only, Password required) Printer sharing - on (Password Required) Password Protected Sharing - on Media Sharing - on it also says to make sure that the settings in the firewall match these. I think that the "network Discovery" option is the important one. |
