1414821 2016-01-20 21:03:00 Am looking at a 2002 Honda CRV Sport, and it's done 207,274 ks. Is that high for the year model?
It looks real tidy and am tempted to go have a look at it. It's with a dealer.

Cheers, LL

1414822 2016-01-20 21:21:00 The Dog & Lemon good rates the reliability as excellent and overall rating of OK as long as it's done less than 120000km but doesn't elaborate. there is a general warning to never buy a Vtec engine that isn't running smoothly without consulting a mechanic as they are not tolerant of improper servicing or wrong oil/ plugs etc. They also note the 4WD system is useless off road and to treat this as a city car that just looks like an off roader. 1414824 2016-01-20 22:51:00 I would ask if it has a catalytic converter. Mine failed (Honda 2002 Odyssey, Vtec engine) during a long trip at around 200 km constant driving, at around 124, 000 k's. The disintegrated ceramic material blew back to the EGR valve, blocking it. So at idle it resulted in rhythmic surging. Fixed EGR , by removing the ceramic, including replacing the cat with a resonator. Also had oil leak under the distributor. Had to replace it's external shaft seal.

Idle Air Control Valve issues seem to happen with Honda's from late 90's - early 200's, causing very low idle. Had to replace mine. Check the petrol cap, Some are a bit hard to unscrew, once they are clicked on. I replaced mine with a higher, easier to remove cap.

Id say that high milage for many cars.
Sure, some cars will easily do 300k+ , but they are often sort of clunky , rattly & of little $ value buy that stage.

Just factor into the price ,that 2/3 of its usefull life is gone

Some would say so.
Having always owned old cars, no it isn't.

Hondas are fairly reliable....

Records in our house: Datsun Ute - around 650,000 when the motor got tired.
Sons current Corolla - 410,000 and going just fine. Doesn't use a drop of oil.

1414829 2016-01-21 01:19:00 I'd spend some money on a service and timing belt change(if it's still original) and keep the 97 for another few years myself if it's otherwise ok and has no major issues.
I don't know what the life of a CRV timing belt is personally though. Once they get to that age they really have no significant resell value left and you may as well keep it until it gives you trouble (or you have the money and just want a new one :))

For a well maintained modern engine 110,000km is not that much, but 200k plus is getting up there when you don't know the history.
My 2002 Camry is just about to crack 100,000 and I've resolved to keep it until It's uneconomical to repair or my mortgage is payed off, luckily the timing belt on my model is recommended to change at around 160,000km by Toyota.

1414830 2016-01-21 04:04:00 The only cars I can afford are higher milage (but newer) than the one Ive got, so Im in the same boat .
Some cars just keep going forever, the simpler cars in general : Corolla's, 323/familia, hilux

Some have the rep of the things to avoid when milage gets up a bit . Its not just the engine , its the other bits that can cause all the issues .
