1414052 2016-01-08 23:20:00 Totally agree, I use to read their massive catalogue a lot. They were the leaders, and I think another store (Reid electronics close 2nd?). ..

Do you mean DJ Reid, who were electronics orientated and were more like JAYCAR is today? They started in an old house in Auburn St, Takapuna (North Shore Auckland) and spread NZ wide, then were taken over by Dick Smiths, who continued to supply electronic components etc for a few years then abandoned those product lines completely in favour of consumer electronics etc.

JAYCAR may benefit a little from DSE's demise, but they are totally different animals so there won't be any parties at JAYCAR's Head Office!

Maybe some other Corporation will resucitate DSE under a new name, but in the meantime their batteries continue to leak............:(

I hope JAYCAR get their battery act together, I've had unused new 9v stock corroding before they even saw duty!

Cheers

Billy 8-{)I have been buying DSE 40 pack of batteries for years and have never had a problem. Last pack purchased about six months ago and so far all ok.

Must be the luck of the Irish!!

1414057 2016-01-09 04:42:00 When did they ditch electronics?
I got my PC toolkit from them I think in 1998, wanted to get another a few years ago but no luck.

1414058 2016-01-09 05:00:00 Anyone remember “Lamphouse”?

They knew what service was .

If you purchased a crystal set or Hikers 1 off them and it didn’t go they would fix your wiring mistakes for you .

Product Knowledge . :D

It is a pity that those days seem to have gone. I guess, like me, it has passed its 'use by' date. Pato (2463)

Then there was Wisemans Electric Co. in Vivian Street which was one of the best electronics parts shops in Wellington, that closed down, presumably due to downturn in parts sales. The downturn was not only due to the fall off in 'home brew' electronics, but also due to the after effects of Rogernomics resulting in the closure of many firms involved with electronic manufacture.

I had forgotten about Wisemans who also relieved me of a lot of cash. Thanks for that Terry. Pato (2463)
