1414851 2016-01-22 19:33:00 Not a fan of dealers with used cars.
They charge much more than a private seller, in general.
Sure they have to have a type of guarantee but it's iffy with older cars, and they lie just like anyone else.

better to buy privately and take an experienced mechanical person with you to thoroughly check it out.

Used car salesmen lie OMG, I never knew that. Ever noticed the model you are trading in they say there is a glut of them and the model you are buying is sought after after.

1414852 2016-01-22 21:39:00 Private sales are definitely better deals but you have basically zero chance of doing anything about it if you buy a lemon. At least with a dealer there is some possibility of mitigating a mistake.

I wasn't trying to choose a car for you on trademe, just using it as an example of a better deal from another dealer. You should do the same search yourself if you are after specific models.
Also I'm not trying to suggest trademe is necessarily the place to go, just using it as a convenient way to get an Idea of prices. A lot of the results were for the 2L version which I assumed you'd be less interested in.

For me I wouldn't buy one as they don't suit my preferences so I haven't put any effort into learning about models etc. If I wanted a 4WD I'd buy a real one or else just stick with a regular car (like I have). I personally don't see the attraction of these in between vehicles that are not really as good at either task (IMHO). At least some of the other brands offer a centre diff lock in case you get stuck, the CR-V is best kept on a road.

1414854 2016-01-23 01:16:00 Thanks dugimodo, I do appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. I don't really mind about the 4wd capability, or lack of it. I'm not very likely to go off road with it. I guess I like Hondas and the CRV suits my needs. I have some difficulty getting in and out of low cars and the CRV being that much higher suits me better, also it's great for shopping and filling up with trimmings and garden waste. I don't have a trailer and I'd be useless at reversing one anyway, lol!

I phoned the dealer and he answered a couple more of my questions, about when the last transmission flush was done and about the ad saying it was a 5 speed auto. Turns out they just call it that because it is in fact a 4 speed with overdrive.

I also got a car jam report on it which told me a lot of other details, it came up very satisfactory as far as I can tell.
As I said, still have not decided yet. I've been looking at others on Trademe and most of the better ones with lower ks are all in Auckland and I have no intention of going there.

Cheers, LL

1414855 2016-01-23 01:31:00 The advantage of going through a car dealer is if anything is wrong they have to fix it.

We had that with the new car I got late last year. It had passed a warrant, BUT wasn't till I found by complete chance the seat belt should have failed it. Took it back, and they said right away they HAD to replace it. They put in a new one (well the place that does the work did) and it was fine after that. If it were a private sale it would have been murder trying to get that sorted.

Only had 1 speeding cam ticket so far in it --AND on Christmas day :D -- damn its so easy to get up-to 60 without even relishing it.

1414858 2016-01-23 07:35:00 I think from a dealer you get a standard 3 month warranty (Visit consumer buyers rights (www.consumer.org.nz)). But generally have to pay up to 1000 for extended warranty, e.g I was offered with Janssens NZ.

Honda Sport CRV...compared with Toyota's RAV 4 (www.toyota.com) 2015. Seems RAV 4 has better navigational features.

.

Perhaps.
Depends on the dealer.....been a few on fair Go - so the getting it sorted isn't always easy.
Plus, they have to sort something not right that is fairly recent, means nothing a few months along....

And like I said, you take a mechanical person with you to view - car dealers or not - if you aren't able to check it yourself.
Always.
