You are just buying trouble when the previous owners had a free ride. These things will go west: radiator, water pump, radiator hoses alternator, starter motor, power steering rack and hoses. The electric windows will start crapping out, clutch and brake master cylinder and slave cylinders start to leak, if its an auto it will be the Honda crapomatic it will start playing up. Sensors on the engine will start dying and spanner light will come on in the dash, then the ABS light. Things like the accelerator cable break. Ignition leads and coils will die. Exhaust pipes and catalytic converters satrt to rust out. Let some black in Manurewa or Porirua buy it. |

| 1414834 | 2016-01-21 07:05:00 | If its a Honda remember that it has 2 timing belts, one to the camshaft and water pump, the other to a balance shaft. Also the water pump, which could seize at any time, is driven by the cam belt which means that the pump should also be replaced with the belt. Having said that, I owned a 1995 Honda US Wagon for 10 years, and only had the belts changed twice, a s/hand starter motor with normal oil changes, filters etc. It never missed a beat. I now have a Suzuki Swift. It has a timing chain, the water pump is driven by a V belt. | mzee (3324) | ||

It's on 410,000 now. he bought it at just under 300,000. He has done: clutch suspension arms put the original wheels back and ditched the mags CV joint 2 x wheel bearings tyres radiator battery Brake pads I have done: Front Brake pads (186,000) Did get the cam belt (and water pump) done when I bought it (171,000) Nothing else Depends on the car and reliability but unlike the old english cars things last a lot longer on modern jap cars. And it's not get to 100,000 and suddenly it needs all that....they happen slowly over time, I'd say nearer 200,000 anyway. Based on all the older cars we have owned and things we needed to do and when. |

| 1414836 | 2016-01-21 20:24:00 | The 2002 model I'm looking at doesn't have a cam belt, it has a timing chain. The dealer is going to phone me when it's ready for sale and I will take a mechanic with me if I can find a friendly one. It flew through its WOF and will have a full service today. I am still a little concerned about the mileage, but will make an informed decision maybe when I see it next. Don't do a lot of ks generally, mainly around town with perhaps two or three trips to Taranaki during the year. Will let you all know when I decide, watch this space! Cheers all, LL |

| 1414837 | 2016-01-21 21:59:00 | From my experience with my 1997 Mazda 626 that had done 230 thousand K it started to cost money at WOF time and wasn't worth keeping so got rid of it even though the car still ran fine. | 1414838 | 2016-01-21 22:27:00 | That's true Paul, but in theory you should keep your car warrantable at all times, not just when the WOF is due. In other words if something needs fixing you shouldn't be leaving it 6 months because the warrant isn't due. The only advantage to a 12 monthly WOF should be not having to pay for it so often etc. You can be fined for having an unsafe car regardless of the state of the WOF. |

| 1414839 | 2016-01-22 02:18:00 | At the end of the day, we are talking about replacing car with approx 100,000, with one thats done 200,000m (approx) I cant see how that could possibly be a good idea . Then again we dont know what the present car is like, maybe its a rolling wreck, infested with homeless cats and with wound back mileage :) |
