597818 2007-10-04 07:59:00 I recently bought a pre-installed Vista Home Premium Laptop Computer from Dell.
When I customised it, I got it so there would be a 40gb partition in one part of the 160gb hard-drive, and the rest in another. The 40gb one is being used for system files etc which is C:. The other one (D:) is being used for all of my data files e.g Music, games etc. There is also a E:, which is my Recovery Drive. Now, there is a Music Folder and stuff like that in the C: drive which is supposed to stored all of the music. What I want to do is transfer all of My Documents folders from XP to Vista and put them in the D: drive with My Music going in the Music folder etc. Is it just a simple matter of dragging the Music Folder into the D: drive and all of those kinds, then putting all of the files in there, or is there something else I can do? Sorry for the very n00bish question, just shows my inexperience to the new Windows Vista. Much harder to use than XP :(

597819 2007-10-04 08:03:00 Start - search - type 'computer management' - open computer management.

In the new window, look at the middle pane and double click on Storage, then Disk Management. And there you are, you should be able to see/edit/create partitions.

597820 2007-10-04 08:05:00 Simple answer - YEP!

Safe way is to open your data and music folder - copy then paste into the new location.

Once sure all music and data is working delete from original location.

597821 2007-10-04 08:12:00 Well, sounds good :) Also, since when I install like a program onto the computer, it will go to the C: drive, and it is already half taken up by the System Operating files and current programs, would I be able to cut and paste all of the Program files into the D: Drive, or do they have to stay in the C: drive along with the System folders? Then later on if it gets full is there a way I can make a bigger partition in C: to allow for more programs? gellehar (12720)
597822 2007-10-04 20:10:00 Program files Simple answer NO!!.

If you have the program installers, then yes.

You would have to reinstall the programs from CD/DVD or from downloads. You can't easily simply copy the programs across, as when they install items go into the reg /system files etc, the exception to that is prgrams that don't actually install on the system when run.

597823 2007-10-04 21:59:00 Well, what I think would be best is if there was a way to move all of my files from the D: Data Drive to the C: drive, and then put the 100gb partition into the C: drive to make it one big partition of like 140gb or whatever with all of my gear in there like music etc., and just have the recovery drive there. Is there a way I can move all of the files from D: to C: and move the partition to C: to make one big partition? It's just like when you create partitions, but you are reversing them. Any help would be muchly appreciated :) gellehar (12720)
597824 2007-10-04 23:12:00 What I want to do is merge the D: partition onto the C: partition. This way it is easier to set up my music and stuff along with having all of my Program Files in one place with the System files too. Is there any programs that will merge the partitions and leave the data intact? If so, what are they, are they compatible with vista, are they free, and how the heck do I do it? gellehar (12720)
597825 2007-10-04 23:35:00 I think Partionmagic lets u do this. BUT, I dont think it works with Vista.

There is a demo, BUT I dont think it'll do much.

597826 2007-10-04 23:39:00 Ok, I've transferred all of my D: drive data into C:, would I be able to delete the D: partition and resize the C: partition, or should I shrink the D: partition to a small amount and resize the C: to a larger amount then delete the D:? I can use the vista data management for this correct? gellehar (12720)
