2007-10-04 00:47:00 | Paradox time here . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I have Kubuntu all up and running, although I don't have everything in it . . . like Colorful Tabs which seems to NOT be allowed in it . . . . but that's a small annoyance . I got Firefox . . somehow almost all by meeself . . . but that's just an accident anyway . . . So . . as I was on the 3,933rd attempt at installing Kubuntu, I got a wild hair and downloaded PCLinux . iso on my Enermax , and now have it all neat and tidy on a cd-rom . . . hmmmmm! Should I or shouldn't I? Remember that this unit, when I am satisfied that it runs and makes noise (it does) and can run OpenOffice and Firefox and all . . . is going to go to a really older guy and his slightly younger wife . He has some XP experience . She has NO puter experience at all . . and I think this'll be hers! With that in mind, if she doesn't know any better, then I'll try to get her up and running on either Kubuntu or PCL . . . what do youse guys think? I just know she'll be looking at HIS screen and trying to emulate his motions with her own keystrokes . . and I want the differences to be as little as possible . I figger if they LOOK the same, they won't know the diff . The learning curve will be about the same for her on either system I feel . . . . . but there's one big, fat problem . . . . . . they only have dial-up . Now . . . I am NOT the best person to be tweaking and writing code for some problem install and work-arounds . . and I imagine that neither of them are gonna be too happy if they have to learn that either . What to do? What to do? This system I repaired won't really support XP with the small amount of RAM . . . but it does seem happy with L-based systems and if this dial-up can be resolved easily enough . . . . . . . . then so be it .

2007-10-04 01:56:00 | SJ, I installed the latest PClos a few weeks ago (several times- but let's not go there!) It is the one linux distro that is closest to useable in a Windows' sense . In other words it installs easily, everything has a GUI, comes with FFox and Thunderbird as well as open office and they all just work . There is also a relatively easy download/install manager (can't remember the wacky name), but it's like I told you in another thread . . . you can type in something like 'nvidia' in a search box and it will bring up a list of nvidia things either out there on already installed . . . you click 'n' tick what you want and it downloads and installs . There's also a pretty good 'instruction manual' on-line which, compared to the other 'man pages' for linux is a dream :) I got the nice nvidia X something control panel (much like the standard colour control menu in XP with Nvdia) . You can also have Wine to run windows apps and unlike other times/distros it was a breeze to set up in PClos . The dial-up issue I guess will depend how old your modem is etc, but I haven't used one for years, so I really don't know . The only other linux distro I have 'almost liked' recently was Mint, but the new Mandriva one will be out soon (currently in 2nd beta) so I might give that a go . Having said all that . . . I'm still using XP :xmouth:

2007-10-04 04:11:00 | OK..I'll pop in another HDD and install PCLinux and see how it goes... Thanks for the info.... Is there any way to make the taskbar drop down like "Hide Taskbar" in XP?

2007-10-04 04:14:00 | I have used many linux OS's and PCLOS is above everythig.I am 70 years old and find it a dream.Tried Mint and Ubuntu and Kubuntu again recently but no contest. It was the first OS I had come across that updated regularly although many more are now doing this. The task bar can be hidden and pop up just like on that other OS | kjaada (253) | |

Is there any way to make the taskbar drop down like "Hide Taskbar" in XP? Yep, as kjaada said, it can be 'auto hidden' as well as transparent, made narrower/smaller, stuck to the side top or bottom as inclination takes you. There are lots of 'eye candy' adjustments' for the desktop (maybe too many options!!!) and it is the easiest linux (well the only one) where I have been able to dload nice new themes etc. Beryl/compiz (the stretchy flippy windows thing) is also good fun but might be overkill for an old man's young lady :D BIG NOTE SJ- Pclos will NOT install on a SATA2 HD... a standard sata drive appears to be no problem tho. |

2007-10-04 07:58:00 | I have trialled a number of distros since 1998 - most of the time I was a Fedora user - that is until I found PCLOS and I think it is tops!! Most things just work - e.g. my PCMCIA card that required me to install a new kernel in Fedora and configure from the CLI just worked. | johnd (85) | |
2007-10-04 08:10:00 | I had Kubuntu on my box for a day and got rid of it. So far PCLinuxOS2007 is the one for me. I also have Fedora7. I have virtualBox installed and Win2k runs in that. If you could persuade them to get an external modem which is a true modem it would make the dialup easy otherwise it can be a fiddle getting a Win modem working.

2007-10-04 14:00:00 | Wow...I found that "Hide the taskbar" thing...just gotta go cruising into the distro I guess. So far, I have been using Kubuntu, and I am getting a little familiar with it...but there's a new 40gig waiting to have PCL installed... Maybe I can dual boot two versions of Linux: Kubuntu& PCL? ...got a bunch of 5.1gig HDDS laying around..too small really for XP but I think just right for L-stuff.
