| 597481 | 2007-10-03 06:41:00 | Surferjoe: K/Ubuntu uses sudo instead of su In any Linux distro you MUST be root to install software. So: to install firefox you would type: sudo apt-get install Firefox The program name is case sensitive too... so firefox is not the same as Firefox :) Also - if you cant remember or dont know the the full name of the package you want to install type the first few letters and hit the TAB key - (linux command line has a handy auto-complete function that will try and guess what you are looking for) One more hint, if you want to install stuff by point and click method try Automatix ( http://www.getautomatix.com ) Just download the install .deb file and right-click on it - go install with packet manager :) |

Stick with it, the previous post from racepics about getting it exactly right holds true and I hear that Kubuntu is a close derivative of Debian, so, my previous post should be correct. |

| 597487 | 2007-10-03 07:01:00 | That's great you got FF working SurferJoe; just shows there's more than one way to skin a cat - in linux. Anyway, it's probably only academic now, but I did a bit of a google and was going to suggest you try "sudo su", to get root privileges then try the apt-get thingee. Sorry, I don't know if you can IM between the 2 systems. |
