597593 2007-10-03 10:17:00 there should be a little connector. like the one on the back of the hard drive to make it slave or master, on the motherboard, and have CMOS written beside it. there should be 3 pins. move the jumper to the middle pin and the one that is not being used. Cho (12330)
597594 2007-10-03 11:00:00 hmm well if it is not complaining that there is no RAM in it then the motherboard is probably dead. would be a good idea to check the ram and other hardware in another PC to see what other parts you may need to purchase to get it working again.

hmm i learn something new everyday :D thanks. although it should beep with no ram in it. and the CPU still there.

You were right about everything else. It should beep with no RAM, so it looks like a dead motherboard to me.

Eklypse77, you have pretty much eliminated RAM as the problem by removing it, so it's going to be either your motherboard or CPU.

Motherboards fail about 20+ times more often than CPUs so I suspect the motherboard here.

597595 2007-10-03 11:03:00 yar i gots a certificate in lvl 4 computing lol. they failed to cover anything decent though.

yeah motherboards are not as robust as CPU's are. ever seen a CPU smolder? tis a riviting experiance :D.

597596 2007-10-03 20:18:00 Um... PROGRESS! I turned on this morning and it beeped twice with green lights on the case. (Methinks when I put the memory back in it messed up). I still have no idea why the whole thing happened.

[EDIT] I tried again and It said on screen that I was missing a floppy drive and press F1 to continue (never had a floppy drive). Works fine now. Very odd....

597597 2007-10-03 20:36:00 Sounds like it had just majorly overheated and cooled down overnight. Be careful.

Go into the BIOS and look for "PC Health" or similar and have a look at the CPU temperature for 5-10 mins. What is it?

Nope not Odd at all, when you reset the BIOS the Motherboard would have gone back to the factory settings. Usually the first thing to boot is the floppy.

Hence its looking for it. This should pop up every time you start the PC unless you disbale the floppy search, and it may even hang on shutdown saying floppy not closed (words to that effect)

Go into the BIOS, under boot settings, select the floppy and disable it / save - reboot.

597599 2007-10-03 21:21:00 i think its about time the board makers removed floppy support, and moved over to USB key booting. Floppys are old as the days. although raid drivers need to be installed before the OS these could be on a USB key.

yeah make sure that it's not damaged from overheating. just because it is working now, does not mean that its all good and well, could have issues later on.

Don't totally agree with removing floppy support, as many repairs can still be carried out using floppies.

I have actually had several PC where the optical drive and USB wont work because of certain infections on the computer - floppy worked OK though.

But I do agree with your warning regarding the overheating - You never know what damage, if any was done.

597601 2007-10-03 21:36:00 tis just that i have had no end of issues with floppys in the past. as in make a boot disk or what ever, go to use it later on any machine, even the one it was made with and its dead. probably an issue of crap brands or crap floppy drives, also never had the need for one. just make Floppy emulated boot CD's Cho (12330)
597602 2007-10-03 22:20:00 All new motheboards will support booting from USB drives. I've done it sometimes on computers up to 4 years old.

So there's no actual advantage removing the floppy drive connector except for perhaps a tiny bit of saved space. On the other hand, it's utterly pointless and there is no reason to keep it.
